I have a laptop running Win 10 with 4GB of DDR3 RAM. The task manager says its using 53% of total RAM, but when I look at the individual usages, they don't make sense. For example, System and Compressed Memory (which as I understand is to optimize paging) is using 137MB, yet when I switch it to a percentage value it says it's using 9%. But of the 3.8GB of available physical memory, 137MB is only around 3.5%. Any idea why it would be doing this? Am I missing something?

Unless you are seeing problems on your system when running programs, ie significant slowness or freezing when launching and using software, or when web searching, then you shouldn't seek to over analyse task manager processes. The figures you quote are mostly meaningless unless you are having actual problems.

The reason I started looking into this in the first place was due to the fan running more often than it should, as well as fairly hot spots on the laptop. The exhaust air is overly hot too....

For that it's best to use a free program to monitor temperatures, a program to monitor hard drive health, and maybe clean out dust and dirt from inside.
