    "problem within a problem"

I've downloaded soime zip (or to be unzipped) software concerning a "pending" disk failures (via a PC Magazine utilities downloadable stuff)

what does one do after that ?? double click on same, like with other executable file downloads ?? I've checked on "help", and in various "for dummies" books, and can't find any topic on zip files

I ALSO can't get some Norton virus scan "thing" to even "virus scan", and haven't been able to find a support e mail address to e mail Nortion on WHY I can't do a virus scan with or via THEIR purchased CD (for about $80)
--I've followed their instructions (which basically amount to re-loading their CD), but that doesn't work---don't know if I should post this in a DIFFERENT topic

If you have Windows XP, you can just right-click on the .zip files and then click "extract all". It will then create a new folder with the extracted contents that are compressed in the .zip file.

Not sure about your other problem though. Best of luck.

    thanks

BUT I have Windows 98SE, and I had to FIRST download some Windows "management thing" (which I did, and apparently was successful on that)---but I'll try to RIGHT click on that zip download (which came AFTER
the Windows 98SE thing" downloading) and see if that right clicking
brings up "extract all" (or something like that)

right clicking on that file (named "a zip file", or that's the file "type")
"formally" named "HDHeartbeatsetup" did NOT work

left clicking on that brings up, once again, "do you want to open or save to disk ?"

well, if I "open" I'm just repeating all that again, and if I save it to disk, I'm just saving it AGAIN

I also have stored in this PC (stored months ago via a download)
some folder named 7-Zip, and within that is a "7 zip file manager" (and other stuff)

but I can't figure out HOW to use the 7 zip stuff (nor its file manager)

You cannot right-click on a zip file with Windows 98 as it doesn't have native support for .zip files, whereas XP does.

You need to have a zip utility installed in order to decompress zip files in Windows 98.

There are plenty available like WinZip, 7 zip and WinRar etc.

Once they are installed, you can then double-click on the .zip file and it will unpack or decompress to a temp or installation folder, depending on how it's set up.

but as I mentioned below I do have 7 zip installed

but I can't figure out how to use 7 zip in "conjunction" (??) with that downloaded zip file named "--heartbeat--"

"---heartbeat---" is supposed to tell me WHEN my hard disk(s) (I have two separate 30 gig hard disks) is/are ABOUT to "crash big time"

but (sigh) of course there are (so far as I know) no temperature sensors, nor vibration sensors, WITHIN this PC, so, how on earth any software can "read", or "see", or predict, such a "pending mechanical failure" is "beyond me"

S.M.A.R.T in your Bios tells you when your disks are about to die.

Anyway, I don't really follow what you are saying, nor do I know what format that hearbeat file is in.

If it's a zip file, and you have a zip utility installed, then all you need to do is double-click or right-click on it.

Open 7-Zip, click on Tools select Options. Now place a check mark in the boxes of the file types you want to associate with 7-Zip, click OK. Exit 7-Zip, reboot your computer.

Now when you right-click on the Zip file you should have the option to Extract the files in the pop-up menu.
