Up-to-date Firewall?

In another thread someone had mentioned the need to have an up-to-date Firewall. Could somone tell me what an up-to-date Firewall is? I thought a Firewall was just a Firewall. I didn't know Firewalls had updates like the updates for virus protection programs and anti-spyware programs. I use the free Sygate Personal Firewall and it's never been updated since I had it. Does my Firewall need updating?

I'm good, chaslang. I just checked my "Help" page for my Firewall and checked for updates, and I already have the version 5.6.2808. Thanks.
