Hey MA, AbbySue, everyone, can you shed some light on this problem? It seems everytime I go to update a spyware (SpyBot, Ad-Aware, etc) or my ZoneAlarm, I'll re-boot, & the update hasn't "taken". Im asked to update again (AVG updates just fine though).

In addition, chat programs do the same thing. My Yahoo friends sometimes keep asking for me to "add them" each time I turn Ym on or off.

What could be causing this frustrating problem? Can you help?

Well, Tim from the moment you posted your post, I've spent all this time on a 56k modem downloading all these programs again & running them all specifically to the instructions given by Chas. I've done this before a few months ago but the programs were all under Owner on my 'puter. This time they were in Sustem/Program Files.

    Nothing notable was found.

    Any new suggestions? I'm baffled.

Strange .... what is your os? (XP?) ....how are you logged on ..(you mentioned Owner - other users/what permissions ..) ....hmmmm....right click on one of the programs and check security tab ...see if the user name that you're logged on with is one of them and has permissions ...(still thinkin' ....):) :)

Shot in the dark ...put your 2000 cd in the drive ....exit out if it starts up ...go to run ...type sfc /scannow and see if it reports any file errors ...
    Have you run CCleaner?

I bought this puter as is, with no 2000 cd, unfortunately. Bought it from a gov't contracted company. I did run CCleaner & it cleaned up a lot of junk. I know this much. The definitions for all the downloaded programs stuck this time, after running that.. :)
