Hi, my laptop keeps trying to update but there are 5 updates that are already downloaded but when the computer trys to install them it says it cant. I have a feeling if i could get rid of them they would reload and this time they would be ok to install. Whats my best way to do this because as it stands every time i switch on it makes the attempt to install them which is not possible. Cheers.

    HI

what updates is your laptop trying to do, are they windows updates, updates for antivirus?

Which windows version are you using?

If you get error messages what are they and in full please as it makes alot of difference to the fix?

This may not be a malware related so maybe moved to the software section at somepoint after you have answered the above.

Hi, it says that this section is for problems related to computer security which is why it got posted here but if it needs moving for better help that would be great.

I am using XP. The updates are windows updates the little yellow icon you get on the taskbar.

    It says
    The following were not installed
Security Update for Excel Viewer 2003 (KB918425)
Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0 (KB922770)
Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0 (KB917283)
Security Update for Office 2003 (KB921566)

    Hi

Sometimes the autoupdater for windows gets stuck and repeats the same updates over and over, so I personally find the easiest way to resolve this is to search for the KB numbers of the missing downloads as MSFT nearly always have these in manual download form, so to help I have searched your missing ones and linked you to the downloads, which you need to download then install, once installed re-boot and go to windows/microsoft update and check if you have any outstandings.

Security Update for Excel Viewer 2003 (KB918425)

.NET Framework 2.0 SYSTEM.WEB.DLL Security Update ( KB922770) you need the NDP20-KB922770-X86.exe at the bottom of the bottom of the page.

    NDP 2.0 ASP.Net Security Update ( KB917283)
adn you need the NDP20-KB917283-X86.exe download at the bottom of the page.

Security Update for Office 2003 (KB921566)

Hi, thought that was the answer to my troubles but it still wont install them, PLUS how do i stop the computer attempting to install the updates every time i log on ! If i can rid the computer of the original dowloaded updates then i can start afresh, so how do i do that please? If you think that is the best way to start off?

DO you get any error messages as to why they will not install?
( especially if you get an error code )

a long list of things to try http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798 which can affect updates or installs.

Just a thought. There are updates which will only install after installing Windows Genuine Advantage and there may also be an Office Genuine Advantage.
