I think it might be time to update my GPU and maybe my mainboard drivers. I'm of the old school if it ain't broke don't fix it, thats why my current drivers are so outdated ... 91.47's 7900GTO and nForce4 AMD 6.70's for the MB. But I got a notice while installing BioShock that I need an update and I'm getting a few hitche's in Oblivion but that could be due to the ever increasing Mod's I'm trying out.

So I went to get the most current DriverCleaner PRO (DC Pro) and it's no longer listed here at all and @ Guru3D they now link it to DC-Pro's homepage but it's shareware. They now recommend DriverSweeper v1.5.5 What do you guys think/recommend?

Also why is there such a huge difference in file size's (see below) and would you recommend the smaller(175.19 36.8MB)? Latest, greatest, biggest isn't always the best as "dlb" quotes here (post #2) -->

    From nVidia site (WHQL only)
    Videocards - NVIDIA GeForce (XP 32-bit) | 82.3 MB
GeForce Forceware 178.24 WHQL XP 32-bit
    ( note @ g3d this file is 119 MB ) :confused

    Videocards - NVIDIA GeForce (XP 32-bit) | 36.8 MB
    ForceWare 175.19 XP 32-bit WHQL
I like the size of this one!

How important is the mainboard drivers update if I'm not having any signifigant problems even running overclocked for quite some time?
And am I going to hate the new Nvidia GUI? Will I loose my "coolbits" overclock? ........

As my sig shows ... no dual cards (SLI) or physics engines etc or fancy HD TV's.

Thanks in advance for any insights ... opinions ... or comments ... :)

Well I must be getting quite a rep of talking to myself here @ MG! But as I suspected updating drivers is way over-rated unless you have specific problems, which in my case was Oblivion going to Heck. I thought my drivers had been corrupted somehow? Or my system was getting tired or outdated. Not so!

Just to add to the knowledge bank, from reading and experimentation, my opinion is the 94.24 WHQL driver is probably the most efficient driver for this somewhat outdated card. The newer ones (DX10) are mostly bloatware for the 7900GTO (512MG). And DriverSweeper seems to work just as good as the old DC Pro.

    Hi

At times there as you mention is no reason to update drivers and chipset IMO never need to be updated as newer ones are only really adding support for newer CPUs and not updating the previous ones unless a significent issue was found, only ever need to install these again if you re-install your OS or have other driver issues, that a chipset driver re-install may help.

Nvidia drivers, bit of a mixed bag some updates can help fix some games, but also on the flip side is that new is not always best as they can cause graphical slowdowns in some games. Nvidia drivers also come in a few guises, you can get the direct specific one for your card which is smaller in size, or liek many sites list for download the unified and international download which has extra languages in them so hence larger size download.

Cheers on the suggestion for DriverSweeper.

Coolbits iirc is built into the latest nvidia control panel as I have overclock options and options to control the fan speed too, takes a bit of getting used to the new options but they are comprehensive.

Thanks :) and TRUE ... When I last updated to the 91.47's, quite sometime ago, you had the option between the new and old interface ... Reminds me of the upgrade period from Win98 to XP ... I still use the "Classic View" in XP ... old school I guess ... and I really dislike bloatware. Also back in the day, you essentially had to run "Rivatuner" to really get control of the dang fan-speed. But the newer interfaces are really quite good as you say! ... just will take some getting use to :-o
