I recently reformatted and installed 98se again, then installed XP pro over it last nite, however internet explorer seems fouled up. I have downloaded IE 6 from another computer and plan to install it, hoping to correct the problems? the error says something like "current operation requires a re-boot", and of course I cannot access the internet. my ethernet driver is functioning, am I doing the right move with a fresh install of IE, or should I re-format and install XP all over again? this is on an older Dell xpst450 with 352 ram.

If I where you (seeing as you do have some way to access the internet) download and install firefox. As for reinstalling windows that may help. I don't know about everyone else but I ussually prefer to do a clean install instead of an upgrade. Also, I am curious as to how you "downloaded" IE from a different machine.

Ok, not sure what firefox is, but will go look for it. I downloaded IE6 onto a memory stick and will take home and load, hoping to cure the sick version I have now. if not, I'll prolly do a new install of XP. thanks.

FireFox is another web browser, but regardless of whether you use FireFox or not, you will need Internet Explorer sooner of later, especially for any Micro$$oft sites.

If you have your Windows XP CD then you can attempt to repair Internet Explorer.

Go to Start, Run and copy and paste the following then O.K.

    rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %windir%\Inf\ie.inf

Or you can go to Start, Run and type in sfc /scannow (note there is a space after sfc )

ok, thanks, I downloaded the firefox browser and loaded it with no help. I got on the phone with my broadband isp, and she had me work on config ip, and renew to find out I do not even have an address (i think it was "run", type in "cmd" and then you can see your current address), seems there is a file missing (this is the error message), but we don't know WHAT file. I want to reformat again, but could not even do this, as with this new XP, don't know how to get a dos prompt. tried to do this by utilizing the Dell resource CD (zz top and format c), to no avail. hoping once a "new install" of XP is done, all should work correctly. a side effect is that the new Mcafee bundle will not install correctly either, but at least I can get the firewall to load. xp help will not load btw.

If you want to format with XP, you don't need a DOS prompt.

Set the Bios to boot from CD, reboot with your XP CD in the drive and follow the prompts.

Once it has installed, remove the CD or it will you will go around in circles.

HERE is a step by step guide.
