I'm looking into getting more storage into my Sony VAIO notebook. I need advice/comments on whether to get the 5400rpm or 7200rpm. It has a 30Gb 5400rpm hard drive at the moment. I'm wanting to get a 160Gb or 250Gb replacement.

If I upgrade to a quicker 7200rpm hard drive how will it effect the notebook... ie batt life, heat, noise?

Will it make much of a difference... worth it?

    Thanks!

It will be noticably faster when reading/writing from the drive. It will reduce your battery life some, and will create a little more heat. That was the first upgrade I did on my laptop a long time ago. I don't know how much battery time I lost, never measured.

I don't think the heat will be an issue. Battery life could be an issue, if you desire maximum battery time. I will take the faster and larger hard drive over a few mins. of battery time for myself.

Thanks for the reply. I think I'll go with the 7200rpm, i mainly use the laptop plugged in anyway. Did you have to start from fresh with all your programs (reinstall Win)?

Not if you have access to another computer or a USB drive adapter. I have used XXClone several times. And it is free! Let me think about where it is located... Some Geek site. http://www.majorgeeks.com/XXCLONE_d5534.html
