Crucial is pissing me off. It use to be you could scan and it would tell you what kind of ram you had and give you options to buy additional ram. Now it scans, tells you how much ram you have but only shows upgrades to SSD's. No choice on Ram upgrade. It's a Asus, notebook, X551CA.

It will take 8 gigs of which I have 4 now.

Well, hell...looks like I would have to remove the entire back to get to the ram..unless it is accessed from the top. On my.

Hummm.....seems the ram is soldered to the motherboard. Crap.

Yeah, that's what I read at CNET. I guess you'd have to have it configured with 8GB when ordered from ASUS.

I read that 2GB is soldered to the motherboard but there is also 1 slot for RAM.
If you have 4GB, you must have a 2GB stick in the slot.

So if you put in a 4GB stick you'd end up with 6GB.
If it will take an 8GB stick, you'd end up with 10GB.

I read that there is only one slot and it is soldered. It's not upgradable. Sigh.

That must be why it only gives you SSD options because I just tried the scanner on two systems here. On this Gigabyte Z170 system, it provided 61 RAM options. It also provided 14 SSD options, however, but I can live with that. I would have been upset if it the scanner did not provide any RAM options so I am relieved that does indeed work as I recommend that often.

If the RAM isn't upgradable, it does make sense not to list any. :p

While we're on the subject, I am starting to look into what's available on the market as far as 2-in-1 hybrid laptops go. Does anyone know if user upgradability even exists on this market, or will I permanently be stuck with whatever it ships with, regardless of what brand and model I get?

It looks like there's a RAM slot on the other side of the motherboard. Have a look at this video. (Pour a drink... it's painfully slow.)
