Upgrading HP BIOS

I've been attempting to update a BIOS on an HP machine, it has Pheonix BIOS on it and from what I've been able to find during upgrading it should be running Alcatraz BIOS. So I went to HP site downloaded Alcatraz and attempted to install by rebooting my computer and bringing XP up in DOS mode but when I run the update and select option to proceed I get this error.

"goto was unexpected at this time"

Then it just goes back to DOS prompt.

HP support wasn't much help they suggested I take the machine to Best Buy and let those geeks upgrade it.

 

If your sys is still under warranty and you can get to these guys readily indeed let them update it. I don't think you should be installing a different BIOS on the BIOS chip. I'm not sure but I doubt very much if this will work and I think it will cause issues at best.

 

It's well out of warrentee. Yeah I thought it would probably be best to not change the BIOS. I've been at this for about 8 months now and I was told that the Alcatraz BIOS will work and would be needed if I were to upgrade the processor. Also had some other issues where I wanted to tweak the AGP aperture but the Pheonix bios dosn't have that ability as far as I can see. HP site actually shows that this model should have Alcatraz BIOS, which is a 9800 series Pavilion PIV 1.5Ghz w/800Mhz RAMbuss memory. The upgrade processor kit is something like 2.1Ghz, probably not worth the aggrivation. Think I'll just let it be. Thinking of building another computer this summer anyway. Was just curious if there was any out there that may have tried something like this.
