My HP Blackbird 002 took a power surge a week or so ago when we lost power during that freak north eastern snowstorm. I was going to upgrade it in the spring but I am forced to do it now. A couple of questions from a newbie:

Here is my PC specs(video cards replaced with GTX 470):

    1. I want to upgrade to a i5-2500k but will I be able to use the water cooler that was on my old motherboard(LGA 775 socket) or do I need to get something different? Even if the water cooler fits would it be sufficient?

    2. Eventually I want some kind of SLI configuration, how much of a power supply should I buy in preparation for that? 1000W sufficient?

    3. Lastly, will a newer motherboard work correctly with an older RAID setup(SATA II backplate I think).

Thanks for the help and any advice you can give me on upgrading this I would appreciate it..

    1) Check your cooler's specs online and see if the brackets are good for an LGA 1155 socket screwhole spacing. If you got it recently, then you might luck out. On the heat issue, the Q9650 uses 125W as opposed to 95W for the i5 so your cooler can handle that easily.

    2) A quality 850W PSU should be more than enough for SLI. My OC'd i7 930 has had a Corsair TX750W powering it 24/7 for the last 3 years.

    3) No idea as I don't do RAID.

Are you sure your mobo is fried? Have you tried a different PSU yet? It would be a real shame if you threw out a good mobo/CPU. Good luck

    BTW, welcome aboard.:)

Well i am assuming my mobo is fried. Fans run and some lights come on the mobo but it doesn't post at all, no beeps. One of the mobo lights is red by the cpu whic I don't recall seeing before. I tried resetting the cmos and that did nothing, i tried a different video card with the same results.
