Hi I'm starting a computer upgrade/repair business and I've had a couple of requests to add memory to notebooks. Now I know in a desktop this is a really easy upgrade. Is there anything special I should know before upgrading the RAM in a notebook? I've never actually opened one up before, but I'm assuming it shouldn't be too difficult. I just want to make sure before I get started.

I always recommend Crucial and use the memory calculator on their website. In business you don't want the hassle and bad name that returns from cheapo units will get you.

Modern laptops have a removable panel underneath and the memory is easy to slip in. You usually only get 1 or two slots so memory may have to be exchanged to increase size. Don't try the older ones until you are more experienced.

Dependending on the manufacturer it should be fairly straighforward. The cover to where the memory modules are located is usually on the bottom of the laptop. There are usually 2 ram slots available and usually they are adjacent to each other.

I say usually because sometimes when you remove the memory cover there is only one such slot. The other slot being inside the laptop with access to it having to go through the keyboard, if you see what I mean.

Laptop ram can be slighlty different in that it can come in low or high density ie 8 or 16 chip module.

I am certainly not an expert on this issue but as I said I have replaced / added extra modules on some of my friends pcs and take great care in getting info first.

The best place to start is with the existing module ie note the specs and then do a google search, then finding compatible is easier.

    Good Luck
