Is it possible to upgrade your processor if it's souldered down onto the motherboard?

    Thanks,

I'm no expert on this, but i reckon it's highly unlikely. I'm sorry i've only ever worked on removable ones before!

Is this a laptop by any chance?

But I could buy a new motherboard and reassemble, right?

Do you know the model number?

See if I can find out for you

With new goodies, I mean. I guess buying a new one may make more sense.

I really can't remember any major chip being soldered onto a board starting from the 8086 days, it was just too expensive to repair and that's why they were in sockets. Are you sure that it's the CPU? Is it even worth it to bring it back?:confused

Sorry, I missed your ninja post! Yes you can put a new motherboard in, no problems. You'll have to know exactly what your other components are to make sure it will all work together though.

    Found this: Soldered CPU removal

Basically it can be done but it's hardly worth the time, effort, and most of all money.

If you can get hold of your PC model number we should be able to find something that'll work.

    What's the approx age?

I haven't checked if it's soldered, just listened to what Dell told me when they tried to sell me a new sys! LOL! Guess I should check.

What do y'all think of the Studio XPS 9000 by Dell? I watch movies, other than that I work (writer who researches a ton). I'm not a gamer but may be with the right sys!

That's wayyy overkill for watching movies and doing word processing but it is a sweet machine. The version I saw here includes a GTX260 video card, I have one and love it! Hey, like I said, total overkill but I'd love to have an i7 machine.:drool It'll last you for many years to come but so will your current machine.

    Thank you for your comments.

As I said below, I have a Dell Dimension 9200 desktop that I bought in 2007.

    Here are the specs:

    --3GB (only 25% used)
--Intel 2 CPU 6300@1.86GHz (pretty good but would like a faster processor)
--no graphics card of any value (base)

I'm planning to purchase a new graphics card and would like to upgrade the processor. What do I need to consider when making such a purchase? I'm planning on installing myself, or asking a friend to.

Thanks in advance for your insights.

    Best,
    KC
