This is probably a stupid question but at my office we just purchased and installed this desktop dispatching software (to the server) and in order for it to run more smoothly we would like to purchase more RAM. Now im sure I can do it myself but the question is what is the right kind to get??

We have right now W2K Server SP4 512 MB and would like to 1 GB.

If you need anymore info, I will gladly give it..

    Thanks bunches!!:)

If you have the brand name and model number (or service tag) of the server, that would help a lot. Otherwise, post as much as you know about what kind of motherboard is in the server, and what processor(s) it uses, that way we can get you a good match. :)

ya think I would have thought of that! doh! LOL

All I know is that its a custom built "Antek" server and a Athon processor. How can go about getting the motherboard information?

    Thanks!

I'm almost certain that its standard DDR RAM, likely at pc2100 or pc2700, but it could be ECC DDR (error checking), which is usually specific to servers.

If you are able to install Everest on the server and run it, you'll get as much info as you could want http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html :) even RAM specific info

Thanks, I'll try that when I get to work tommorrow. When were pricing RAM It was talking about 15 pin, 22 pin (I think) will it tell you how many pins you need? or do you have to check manually?

    Thanks again!!!!:)

Most likely it is 184-pin DDR SDRAM. If it is much older, it could be 168-pin SDRAM.

Again, this is just an educated guess until there is something concrete to go by. :)

    Dyamond:
Yes, there is a difference. The memory you linked to is ECC, what you need to install into the server is non-ECC. Think of them as gas and diesel... a car made for one of the two will not run on the other, and mixing them is definitely not a good idea. When in doubt, always match what you already have installed.

The only difference I know of is the RAM you linked to is ECC. You Motherboard appears to capable of using it, but I am not sure if ECC / non-ECC can be used together (Anyone?). That motherboard does not appear to be an actual 'server' board, so I would just go with regular (non-ECC) RAM.
