    Hello.
I am having problems upgrading my pc to the 64 bit version of windows 7.Whenever I put in the 64 bit cd an error message pops up saying that:

"the installation disc isnt compatible with your version of windows. To upgrade you need the correct installation disc"

I have run the windows 7 upgrade advisor and says that my computer can run the 64 bit version.
I am just curious as to wether its the cd that needs replacing or that my pc needs an update or something.
It also might be worth noting that even when the cd is in the drive and i reboot the pc,it doesnt auto run like all other os install cd`s, so i cant even manually install it like it recommends in the error message.

I have upgraded from windows xp sp2 to windows 7 32 bit for now, which was fine.

Any help would be much appreciated.
If necessary i can post a list of my pc`s hardware/software if anyone needs it.

You can't upgrade from 32 bit windows to 64 bit. It is a fresh install. The upgrade advisor just says you can "upgrade" to 64 by wipe and reload only.

    Hi

Agreed with theefool, if you can run x64 Windows 7 and the upgrade advisor says so then clean (custom) install is your only route I'm afraid.

What you could use if you want to keep your settings, it will nto save your applications but only things like favorites, my docs etc is to run Windows Easy Transfer

Thanks you 2 but that isnt the problem im facing.
When i try to run the 64 bit cd, it comes up with a error window saying

"This installation disc isnt compatiblewith your version of windows. To upgrade, you need the correct installation disc. For more information, check your computers system information. To install a new copy of windows, restart(boot) your computer using the installation disc, and then select custom(advanced)"

that is word for word what the message says.
the thing is is that is all it does. there is no manual boot install and no window that opens to let me manually install.that is why i was wandering if its the cd or my pc that has the problem.

Did you change the boot sequence to boot first from your DVD in the BIOS? Then you would normally get a screen asking you where you want to install it or an option to wipe your hard drive clean to prepare for X64 installation. If it's a retail W7 then you should be OK to go, if it's an Upgrade disc you'll have to install it twice, once without the key and a second time with the key entered and then activate it.

It sounds to me like you have a 64 bit upgrade disk, as opposed to a installation disk, which is what you would need. :wave

    Hi

If you are running the setup file from that disk from the GUI of your already installed Windows 32bit then that is the problem, you cannot upgrade install 64bit Windows over 32bit Windows, it needs a clean or custom install (hence why the message says at the end "select custom(advanced)") and thats the instructions that Augie has posted in booting the the Windows dvd directly, and clean isntalling Windows 7 64bit, some instruction HERE

If as Brandy has pointed out, you have a Windows 7 64bit Upgrade dvd over a full version, then you cannot upgrade your 32bit to 64bit as the upgrade runs in the main from the GUI of Windows, need full retail version of Windows 7 x64 to do this.

Well, I guess MS finally just closed that loophole that has existed since Vista. If this is the case then Space_Rocks is out of the cost of an upgrade disc.:( Here's a recent article from Windows Secrets with a how-to.

    I hope I'm not contravening MG's ToS.;)

    Hi Augie

May still be there, not attempted it as dont use that route, so worth a try, just I've never attempted it and not going from 32bit to 64bit, would be interesting to know if it works, just need a guineepig with time and the right dvd to give it a whirl.

Ya, I've got a full W7 Ult retail and will not buy an upgrade disk for obvious reasons.;) Well, Space_rocks only has this route to go. I really do wish that these things were marked clearly on the disk or at least the salespeople know what to ask. *sigh*
