Hi :) Hope someone can help, I stupidly opened a zip file that contained a nasty virus, see here..... http://urbanlegends.about.com/b/2008/07/15/ups-virus-warning.htm

My pc would not open the start up page so I got in through task manager, then ran spybot but on restarting it went into a loop that kept logging me off so couldn't get on at all. (also won't let me start in safe mode) I then installed a second copy of windows and am running from that. I have tried various antiV programmes as suggested in the link above but they do not seem to look at the first install of XP which is where the problem is :(

Can anyone tell me how to clean up my original windows set up via the second set up?

    Thanks in advance :)

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

This is possibly more of an issue for the Software Forum since you needed to clean the original Windows setup. Not sure how you installed the second. Like if it is on its own partition and if you have a boot menu at startup that allows you to choose which partition to boot from. ( like mentioned here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q306559 )

We could run our cleaning procedures which which could possibly locate some potential malicious files, but it will not repair a broken Windows OS especially if it is not running. To do that, you needed to boot from CD and repair the original copy of Windows.

    Thanks for the reply :)

I tried to repair it from the windows CD but it did not give me a repair option? so the only thing I could do was either clean install or dual OS, so I went with the dual for now but the problem is still sitting there not letting me log in <_<

I can at least access my important files from the second OS so I guess I will have to put them all on another drive and do a clean reinstall :(

    Thanks for your help :)

This is outside the realm of the Malware Forum at this point but you could use the Recovery Console and the below procedure to possibly restore an old System Restore point if the did not get removed by installed a second copy of Windows (but they may have been removed since you cannot have two System Volume Information folders):

At anyrate, you may be able to get more ideas by posting in the Software Forum. I could move this to the Software Forum for you....... in fact I'll do that now.
