I ran the steps listed on the thread "READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide" and it requested a "reboot" of the computer.

When I rebooted I can log onto windows (XP Pro) and my desktop image shows up however the start bar and all of the desktop icons are missing. I tried rebooting using the task manager however it just resulted in the same result.

The programs removed a ton of issues on the computer... I ran all the programs yesterday but I decided to do a second sweep today. About 190 threats were removed including Virtumonde and Fraud. The second run of SUPERAntiSpyware came up with about 80 threats so I started again. Last one I ran was MB and rebooted into the problem listed above.

Any help, hopefully quick help, would be great because I would like to avoid the wrath of my boss. Thanks.

    and now a new one...

I hit "ctrl + alt + del" to log in and enter the password and it logs me right back to the "hit ctrl, alt, del" screen....

Step 3 of the Win XP cleaning procedure clearly states not to do this. The below is a direct quote
After running the first time, you should have attached your logs.
Now you have run it twice and still have not attached any logs.
No logs equals no help since we will not know what problems you really have.

If you are now being looped back on your login screen, it means that userinit.exe file has been deleted, infected or corrupted or the registry keys associated with it may have been deleted or corrupted. Have you tried logging into safe boot mode? if that does not work then you will need to do the below:

Crap... I must've missed, and/or forgot that. I would post the logs if I could get into the computer. Thank you for the link. Since it's a work computer and this is past my realm of knowledge we have the company who takes care of our computers coming in today to repair the workstation. Computers 1, Mike 0.

Our "tech guy" came in and turns out many of the windows files were corrupted. We were able to salvage important info by slaving the HD to another workstation and transferring it off and just used the system restore disk.

Thanks for your help even with my continued stupidity. Sorry I missed that, although I am still learning I hoped I could at least read... *sigh*

    You're welcome.

There have been quite a few cases of this lately. In some cases we are advising to do a reinstall to fix these PC since they could be unreliable/untrustworthy even if we attempt to remove all visible malware.
