First of all, don't panic. An absolutely dead computer is very likely a bad power supply. It could even be as simple as a blown fuse in the power supply...were there any power surges or flickers which might have caused it? Regardless, the first thing to take care of is getting to your essay. The easiest thing to do would be to put your hard drive into another computer as a slave drive, and just copy the file. Are there any other computers in your house? Or perhaps a friend has one you could do this with?

Otherwise, get it down to the local computer shop asap & tell them you need the essay from your hard drive & fixing it can wait until later. I'm assuming you don't have tools such as a voltage meter to check the supply with, so a fix-it shop is your best bet for quick action, if you can't slave your hard drive in someone else's computer.

Please don't start threads for the same issue (cross posting) in more than one forum.

Some basic information would be helpful such as system specs, operating system, hardware etc. Is there power ot your fans, etc?

Does the computer post at all?

    Can you enter BIOS?

    Erm
    2.8 Intel
    512 RAM
    XP PRO
    120 GB Matrox Harddrive
Theres actlly 3/4 fans! Alot of fans
The fans are all dusty tho can that be a problem?
But wait the power lead i checked that even replaced it didnt work.. the green light that indicates that your computer is connected works btu just doesnt turn on!

Ok..back up a minute.:) When you try to power on your computer do you hear any of your fans running? Or is your HD light flickering? If you are not hearing any of these chances are it is your power supply that has gone out....if you do seem to have power...

Do you hear any beeps coming from your MB when you try to power on?

Thanks for clearing that up!:) Many times when people say nothing happens there is something happening, just not what they think should happen, like windows loading.

That being said, as stated previously it does sound like your power supply has gone out.:(

its the actuall PS if you ask me. Im no expert but that sounds like the culprit and is a common problem. When u get a new one. make sure u get a good one. 450-500w Plus with a high +12 rail, atleast 18 or higher.
