Okay let's try something with HijaakThis:
    1) run it but do not select scan. Instead select the Config button (lower right)
    2) click Misc Tools
    3) check the two boxes under the Generate StartupList Log that say
    - List also minor sections (full)
    - List empty sections (complete)

    4) click Generate StartupList Log this generates a notepad file. Paste it back here.

Well I did not find anything in there that was useful to resolve this winlogin thing.
Shutdown everything you can and have one Internet Explore (yes this time I want one running but only one window) running.
Now go back to that same Config are of HijaakThis but this time click on Open Process Manager
and on the top right hand side click show DLLs. In the upper window (Running Processes) click on the iexplore.exe that is running. Look in the bottom window and see if you see either of these two DLLs:
    win32sockdrv.dll
    yuetyutr.dll

    Get back to me.

  4. hithere

    hithere Staff Sergeant

I checked it 3 times (even refreshed the list) and did everything u said. but no. there were none of those two dlls. what does that mean? i'm guessing it's bad. the closest one was WSOCK32.dll (it's not really close actually).

  5. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

The two filenames I gave you are DLLs that have been known to be related to the winlogin.exe virus. Try the same thing again but this time in the Running Processes window select explorer.exe instead of iexplore.exe. Look for those two DLLs again.

  6. hithere

    hithere Staff Sergeant

i searched in explorer. still no...:-(

  7. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

Search your PC for the two files:
    win32sockdrv.dll
    yuetyutr.dll

Again make sure you use advanced search with hidden files.

  8. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

    Also use regedit again and:
    1. Navigate to the key:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
    2. In the right pane, double-click: Shell
    3. In the Value data box tell me if there is anything to the right of explorer.exe

  9. hithere

    hithere Staff Sergeant

I searched the PC and there was none found.
There was nothing in the right of explorer.exe either.
But... i did see both win32sockdrv and yuetyutr in the Registry Editor at

    My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Search Assistant\ACMru\5603

    and

    My Computer\HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-3852877488-2966961371-3350961549-1003\Software\Microsoft\Search Assistant\ACMru\5603

Those were where winlogin was found at the Registry last time (if u remember). The latter registry path was right there, staring at me when i opened the registry. (that's because that was where i left off last time.)

  10. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

Okay! Did you delete those entries too? And then continue searching to see if there are anymore hits?
    Search again for winlogin too.

After that reboot. And let's try again to delete that HijaakThis entry.

i did, still no. i also tried in safe mode for the hijackthis. this winlogin just won't give up!!

  12. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

Run regedit and goto to the below key, tell me what you see:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Then in the right pane scroll down to UserInit and double click on it. Is the Value Data the following:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,

Make sure you scroll all the way to the right to make sure nothing else is hidden there. Some hijackers insert many spaces or tabs to force themselves way to the right off the screen to hide themselves.

If so, get to that file with Windows Explorer and right click on it and get Properties, from the General tab give me the Size info and Modified date and time. From the Version tab get Company and File Version info.

Damn this thing is annoying. Let me just verify something. Everything on your system is now running okay. We have fix all the problems except for the fact that we cannot get rid of the HijaakThis line that indicates your system is loading winlogin.exe. And the reason we cannot fix the line is that HijaakThis believes that the process is actually running but yet there is no trace of this file anywhere on your PC? Is that about correct?

Please do a search for mobsynca.exe on your PC.

Also check to see if you have the below registry keys (use regedit) where HKLM is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE:

    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\Synchronization Agent

    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce\
    Synchronization Agent HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices\
    Synchronization Agent

If you find them, tell me what is under each of them.

Yep, your absolutely correct! Maybe there isn't winlogin left... maybe it's just a glitch, or something.

    no mobsynca.exe

i couldn't find any of them and for the last one there wasn't even the "RunServices" folder

i found none from there either...

U know everything's fine in the computer maybe we should just drop this problem as an "unsolved mystery"....

I agree for now. It's just bugging me why we cannot cleanup that item with HijaakThis.
Do you still get the exact same message with HijaakThis when trying to fix that line. Just repost exactly what you get so we have it right at the end for easy reference later if this comes up again in another user log.

And for now I'll consider your problems resolved but one last thing (it may have come up already but I don't want to search back thru the thread now). Do you have a firewall installed? If not, get one. It may be useful to determine if anything strange is using your PC hidden from normal view.

  18. hithere

Nope, i don't think i have a firewall installed. i'll get one. And i'll repost the problem i get in my next post.

So, Chas, i'll like to give u a big THANK YOU for helping me and solving the frustrating problem and making this thread over 68 replies! man, that gotta be a record for the most number of replies by 2 people (and a few others)! Or maybe not. but anyway, thanks!! :)

Also THANKS to the others who replied to this post. And also for the viewers!

    WHAT THE...!!?? Problem SOLVED!!

Hey... uh.. i don't even know how to explain what happened but the HijackThis line is removed! Yup, O4 - Global Startup: winlogin.exe is REMOVED!! The winlogin.exe that has been causing problems.

I was gonna put the message i get whenever i try to fix "O4 - Global Startup: winlogin.exe" on my next post. So i opened HijackThis WITHOUT closing the internet explorer window that i had opened. i scanned and then tried to fix the line. Instead of the usual error message appearing, it got removed... at first i thought i checked the wrong thing and removed it but nope, O4 - Global Startup: winlogin.exe is gone... weird...How? I didn't do anything: i didn't uninstall anything, i didn't reboot in safe mode, i didn't end any process in the task manager....... My PC is weird!

So.. in the strangest way, PROBLEM SOLVED!!!

    HOW???

I don't know! All the previous things I had you try should have worked but nothing ever did. There as no reason why it should not have been removed the other times.

Oh well. We are now 100% (I hope) done!

I ran into this problem and since I am computer illiterate, I didnt get a whole lot of help from these posts.....no one but me is at fault for that...........anyways, I did find an easy solution and am just wondering if anyone could see a problem with this; I use xp and after I got exhausted, I just simply put everything I wanted to save in shared folders created a new desktop and deleted the old one........everything is still fine three days later, so I think it actually worked
