I had noticed in the last week or two that when I try to get into control panel through the start menu, it takes about 2 minutes to open and in the meantime locks up my taskbar, system tray, quick launch icons, clock, and all the while, the start button stays depressed. After a bit, it seems to refresh and everything I clicked opens all at once. I put a shortcut to control panel on my desktop and it works fine, thought I could work around it and my immediate problem was solved. But now my desktop is messed up, it is white instead of blue and says active desktop recovery at the top. I can still see my icons, they actually block the print of what it says to do. It tells me to right click the desktop, choose properties, desktop tab, customize desktop, web tab, and the only thing listed there is "My Current Home Page." when I click properties, it says "URL: About:Home" These are the only indications of a problem.

I have my home page set in internet options as Google and have not had any problems with it coming up. I spent all day yesterday running every virus and spyware remover, registry cleaner, maintenance thing I can think to do, in normal and safe mode, but it still isn't right. Is this a software problem or do I have a virus?

Well, I honestly don't know if I really have a problem or not. I right clicked on the screwed up desktop and I believe I turned off the active desktop (I don't think it shouldve been on to start with) and it looks okay now. The About:Home thing is unchecked, so I'm hoping that won't be a problem. So I'm left with the Start, Control Panel hangup, but I made a shortcut that doesn't cause the delay, so I think I can work around that if nothing else rears its ugly head. If anyone has any thoughts, I'd love to hear them. Otherwise, I'm just gonna try to go with it.

I doubt this is a malware problem and would suggest that you post in the software section....however if you think it may be malware related:

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.

Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    Note:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can running steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

Starting your computer in Safe mode

    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
