In recent laptops, like my Sony Vaio FS660, is powered USB 2.0 a standard feature? IE, can I run a portable HD off it? Thanks!

Do you mean boot from it or just use has slave harddisk???

If boot you have to check your bios and if slave not a problem if you have
a usb 2.0 you can buy an external harddisk.... they are pretty cheap now...

No booting needed. Just want to be sure that any USB 2 port is, by definition, a powered port.

Also, would a portable HD drain lots of power from the laptop's battery? I don't get more than a couple of hours as it is.

That depends on the external hard drive.

If it has it's own power supply (like a power pack), it won't use much if any, laptop battery power.

If it doesn't, then yes it will.
