Hi I just ordered this Western Digital Hard Drive with a high speed female port for the micro b end of a USB cable, picture at this link:

I am wondering, can I plug a non high speed male micro b plug into that port, which would be like plugging in just the half of the port...it sort of looks like it was designed for that but am checking first. Cable picture at this link:

P.S: I know it comes with the high speed cable, but I need a Y USB cable for it to work with my console. And the cable pictured is available to me now.

Are you sure it's micro and not mini? Micro connections are for cell phones. All of my external computer devices (hard drives, optical drives, etc.) have mini (NOT micro) "B" female connections.

USB 3.0 is backward compatible with USB 2.0.

The cable link I posted shows 'micro' and it's described as being for external hard drive...I just assumed they are all micro. Is there another y cable That would be 'mini'??? Maybe the store listed them wrong?

I also included the link to the hrad drive cause you can see the picture of the high speed port I'm refeing to if you click on the picture...does that look like mini or micro to you?

I know the USB end is compatible with either....I'm wonering if the high speed mini port could be fitted with a normal mini male cable.

ok I checked micro, there are USB Cables for external hard drives listed as both micro and mini...I also checked the checked the cable that does fit the high speed port and it is listed as micro.

See how this cable matches the port on the WDHD:

    http://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters...8&qid=1417435801&sr=8-6&keywords=usb+y+cables

And it's listed as high speed micro. So what i'm wondering is IF you didn't have the cable linked above (if you don't mind looking so you know what i'm refering to) which has the two small rectangles, you only had a normal mini end which would only fit into the smaller rectangle in the female port on the HD....would that still work, only not high speed?

You can use the micro USB2 cord in the micro USB3 port, with USB2 speed only. BTW, it fits in the larger port.
