Hi all - who knows stuff about USB problems?

I've had this problem for too long now, and have tried multiple places getting advice. But I can't fix it.

My USB devices (ususally just my External HD but can be an ipod, if plugged in) will randomly reset, causing windows (XP home) to play the "device disconnect" and "device reconnect" sounds. My system tray tells me that the hi speed device can run faster if plugged into a 2.0 port (all my ports are 2.0). Then my computer freezes for about 2 minutes while the thing thinks, then runs autoplay. My computer is not oversapped for power, I do not use a USB hub, and the device itself receives power from the wall. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS? Thanks

    Steve

I have this exact same problem as well...only started happening when I got an external HD and is really annoying, but I haven't been able to solve it yet :(

    Hi All,

I'm running XP Home. Have the same problem with my Card Reader and maybe other devices. Only happens if I leave it plugged into the USB and shut down and then reboot. If removed before shuting down and re-connected after boot there is no problem. If I find a solution I will post it.

    Good Luck, Jim

I haven't fixed my problem yet. Someone suggested that my computer's PSU might need replacing. I might try that

    Hi again Pros,

If the computer is running off your PSU there is no way it has anything to do with the problem. Only thing used from the PSU on the USB is +5 Volts. Of course, my engineers always said " Electronics is capable of 1,000,000 errors per milisecond".

    Good Luck, Jim
