USB Driver Issue

I have been trying to use my Western Digital 1TB External Drive and a USB Driver error came up on the Device Manager. How do I find the Drivers for it?

I've tried updating my computer and nothing. I did the whole right click on the device manager thing and nothing.

It's uses a USB port like the other external drives I have. I need to know why this new drive does not show up on my computer. All my other ones do.

Can it be that the drive is too large or something?

I suppose your pc may be too old to use enhanced usb, you can post make and model numbers of pc and somebody might find what you need. ed

 

Firstly I thought WD drives came with an install kit including drivers etc?

Secondly is it possible your pc does not have usb 2.0? I know it's been around a while but your pc is pretty old.

What model of Pavilion is it?
Aslo, what model of WD hard drive is it?

I just got an external USB 2.0 and it's installed and everything, but when I plugged in my WD drive my computer still doesn't read it. Can it still mean my computer is still too old?

 

I guess it's possible that the HP simply doesn't like the WD drive, I've often encountered HP machines refusing to take other hardware, but ext.drive I wouldn't have thought mattered, it's usually printers and cameras etc.

Have you tried the drive in a different PC? Could be a problem with the drive.

Oh and what model of Pavilion is it?

Just thought of something else, you say you have other drives? How big are they?

Did you install a USB 2.0 PCI adapter card? If so, then you will need to install the drivers for it before connecting the hard drive per the troubleshooting section of the WD My Book Users Guide. The drive will not be recognized properly unless USB 2.0 root hub and host controller drivers are installed. You will have to contact the adapter card manufacturer for installation procedures.

Now, if I understand correctly, if you take the 2.0 adapter card out you should be able to connect to a 1.1 hub (if you have a port already on the computer). The drive is supposed to be backwards compatible to 1.1, but the transfer rate will be painfully slow.

 

Well thanks for all your help. I ended up getting a brand new computer to find out later that the brand new drive just did not work at all. I exchanged it for another one and worked like it was suppose to.
