H guys. Last night i was playing a game which I installed a few days ago. All working fine. then I had an error come up saying that the system could not write to M drive. I have had this before when my dog sits under my desk and pulls the power plug out. Anyway. I turned off all my external hard drives ( of which M is one) and rebooted which usually solves the problem but once restarted I had no external drives at all showing. I normally run 5. I keep getting a message saying that the system cant recognize the USB device. I have reinstalled the USB drivers that came with my motherboard but no difference. Also went into device manager and uninstalled the USB hubs etc so they reinstall but still nothing. If I go into disk management they dont show up at all. I am stumped.
    My system is a P4 2.8GHz, 2 Gb ram, Motherboard Gigabyte P4 titan 8S655FX,
    running win XP pro sp3.
All my external HDDs have been fine with no probs at all ever. I tried plugging in a USB flash drive and it found and installed it then said it was ready to use..then came up with the same error and said it couldnt recognize the device.
USB wireless mouse works fine but all storage devices seem to be a problem. I even looked in Disk Management and theyre all gone. I downloaded the unkown devices software from here and it brings up a heap of unknowns under the USB section but I am unsure what to do next. I think i have included all the info you need.
    HELP!!:cry

    Hi

In device manager are there any yellow ! marks and if so by what devices?

I just wonder if you have damaged system files, try running sfc /scannow from the run box and have your XP CD handy or in the drive as it may need some original files.

No there were no yellow or red marks on any items. But thanks anyway..I fixed it! Uninstalled all of the USB host controllers and shutdown. Then rebooted and let windows reinstall them and PRESTO...all is good! Hopefully thisll help someone else if it happens to them. Still no idea why it happened tho.

    Hi

Cheers for the update, but as to why, could be a number of things from a new USB hardware device corrupting the controllers, to a power outage (dont know if you suffer fluctuating power or not where you are).

But glad its all working now and again cheers for the update and what fixed it.

Have actually been testing my power over the last 2 days and no fluctuations. ALso no new USB devices, It actually happened again yesterday and i did the same thing to fix it.. I did notice that the external drives were rather warm to touch this time as it was a hot day (43 degrees C) and I didnt (at that stage) have the air conditioner on. Whether that might cause it??
