USB modem

any thoughts on a wireless USB modem?
I want to get rid of my home phone, I don't use it anyway, cept for DSL, so If I got a USB modem, I could get rid of it, I assume.
and just use the USB modem, for internetz and the cell for calling for pizza, right?

the only provider I know who sells this is Cricket, if this plan works like I hope it does, what service should I use to get the internet and can I just get a USB modem from anywhere?

 

The official technical term is 'mobile broadband'. It varies greatly in its speed. Cricket has it, so do all the major cell phone carriers (ATT, Sprint, Verizon, etc). If all you're using the net for is basic stuff like email, surfing, the occasional download, etc, then mobile broadband should be fine. However, if you do ANY online gaming (World Of Warcraft, for example), or any serious downloading (movies/music via iTunes, torrents) then do NOT go with mobile broadband. It is not acceptable for hardcore bandwidth needs.

The 'service' you get the internet from is whoever sells you the modem. If you get the modem from Cricket, then Cricket is your ISP (Internet Service Provider). It would be no different than how surf now except you'd pay Cricket (or ATT or Sprint or Verizon or . . . ) instead of the DSL people you pay now. And if you do any out-of-town travel, you'll probably want to go with one of the big cell phone companies (Sprint, etc). Cricket is still somewhat localized (I think :confused) and could result in outages and MAJOR roaming charges, but you'd have to look into this yourself.

I was thinking about buying a USB modem via ebay and then finding a service provider, I'll ask sprint since they are my cell phone carrier
