I'm having quite a bit of trouble with my desktop USB situation. I'm pretty sure now it's a hardware issue but I wanted some other opinions and you all are quite helpful. Here's the situation:

So, I have had my motherboard, an ASRock 939Dual-SATA2, for about 5 or 6 months now. Everything has worked fine until a couple of weeks ago.

One day, my USB mouse just stopped working and I received the following error:

    USB Device Not Recognized
One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it.

The first few days, this only happened rarely. After I turned off the computer and let it sit a while, it would start working again. Now, however, it happens after about 5 minutes of use. Each time, though, if I turn off my PC and let it sit for an hour or two, it will work fine for that first 5 minutes.

I thought it was my mouse, but my mouse works fine on my laptop.

I thought that the particular USB port had malfunctioned, but I used another USB port, that is connected into the USB header on my motherboard, and the same problem occured.

I checked my drivers but they were all up-to-date. Strangely, the USB driver on the ASRock webpage would not install (it said something about my system already being 64-bit) so I am just using the windows drivers.

I downloaded all updates from Windows Update. Lastly, I checked for viruses.

None of this worked. To add on, there are some weird things happening.

Sometimes the mouse will malfunction, but, if I connect it to another port, the buttons and the slider will work but not the mouse movement.

I tried using my small laptop mouse. It worked for the last couple of days, even when my main USB mouse did not, but it just stopped working on me. However, it did not receive the USB malfunctioning error. Also, it's slider and buttons will work but just not the mouse movement.

I tried using my roommates mouse, which works fine, but my computer did not even detect it...

So, this sounds to me like a motherboard problem. Especially since not just one USB port, but all USB ports (even the one connected to the USB header) seem to be having the same problem.

I'm thinking of simply buying a PCI USB but I wanted some other ideas. Should I try to get in touch with tech support of ASRock? Is there a possible software issue that I am missing?

Anyways, any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas.

Did you reinstall the mouse driver? Did you try to use another USB Devise? If it does not work then your USB Ports are probably damaged or its a motherboard problem.

Just curious ..have you turned off power management for each port?

In reply to #2, I decided to try a non-mouse USB device, my printer, to see if it worked. So, after my mouse malfunctioned, I tried printing out a page. And, it worked - no problems with it.

While my mouse was working, I tried to update the drivers for it. But, none were found on the internet through Windows Update. Windows XP is just using the default drivers.

That just adds to the confusion here.... why would I only have trouble with the USB mice but not with my USB printer?

In reply to #3, I unchecked the box titled "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" for all of my USB ports. Is that what you were referring to? Anyways, it did not help, unfortunately.

Any other ideas as to what is going on here?

I wanted to thank you two for your help. The problem was indeed that the USB hardware was not working. It has completely stopped now and won't work at all (for any device). I had to buy a PCI to USB for now until I can, hopefully, get a replacement MB as it's not too old.
