    Hi All!
    Long time reader,
    First time poster.
    Hello!

    So. Here we go.

I have been given a computer by some friends and they told me the USB ports do not work. But they sort of do work.

Dealing with a WINDOWS XP system.
(Ran spybot & McAfee and found nothing)

When a USB device is plugged in, Windows does not pop up a prompt that an item was plugged in and search for the drivers..

Instead , when a USB device is plugged in it shows up in the device manager with a Yellow ? mark, and Windows makes no attempt to install it.

When I update/install driver it recognizes that device and then will allow it to function. When I change usb ports it needs to be re-installed.

Feels like a windows problem I just cannot solve.

    Any Ideas?

    Thanks,
    FRYSTERIO!

With no USB device plugged in, Open Device manager and expand the USB section.
Right-click on USB 2 or USB Enhanced Root Hub and select properties. Post what is under Driver and Power.

So, you're running Windows XP.... which service pack? What is the make and model of the PC and/or motherboard?

Go to Device manager, Start...Run....devmgmt.msc, uninstall all USB devices and reboot.

-Have attempted to remove all USB drivers and reboot... the result was me having to go through each Yellow Question Mark and click update driver manually. The same result as when I plug any device into the USB port.

I believe it's a WINDOWS issue at this point.

Windows will not attempt to install any new hardware.

When drivers are uninstalled they simply will show up as OTHER DEVICES, and will only be installed when manually installed or the drivers are used.

Any chance someone knows how to make windows resume searching & installing new devices when they are installed/plugged in?

    Thanks,
    Fry

Open Control Panel, then Admin Tools, then Component Services. Scroll down to Plug and Play. It should be automatic but maybe it isn't set that way.
