I've been told that I will need to reinstall my USB port drivers. The HP support people say there is a fee to reinstall the drivers. When I bought the HP computer, it was already loaded with windows XP and a bunch of other stuff. Apparently, I really don't know for sure, I am just guessing, but, the USB port drivers are apparently on the CD. How does the computer loose the drivers?
It just doesn't seem fair that I should haveto pay to get the drivers back.

There shouldn't be any need to install drivers from HP for your USB ports if my searching was correct. Your computer contains a motherboard that has a VIA chipset and VIA is natively covered in Windows. All that you should have to do is go to Device Manager/Hardware, click on the Universal Serial Bus tab at the bottom to expand it, and delete/uninstall each item one at a time. When finished, exit Device Manager and reboot. On reboot, Windows should detect the USB hubs and ports and install the necessary drivers. Hope this helps!:)

I clicked on Universal Serial Bus tab and this is what I have and nothing else:
    USB root hub
    USB root hub
VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller
VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller

Working through my problem with HP technical support and looking at my Device Manager we could see I didn't have a USB Composite Device listed there. Also when I plug in the USB cable , I am supposed to get a pop up window saying "Found New Hardware" but that didn't happen. So thats how we came to the conclusion that I needed USB drivers.

The only thing that I see missing in your USB devices is a PCI to USB host controller, and I've checked three of my computers and they all show at least one. As for as a USB composite device, this is generally a mouse and keyboard connection, unless I'm mistaken, unless HP was referring to the PCI to USB host controller.

I'm not one to argue with an OEM about problems, but try the suggestions that I gave first, as it isn't all that unusual for Windows have this sort of issue.:)

Just another question if you don't mind, would you be the BCgreen in this link,
http://forums.techguy.org/hardware/460192-usb-port-drivers.html ? If so, it would have been nice to know that the problem originally started as a printer issue. There have been all kinds of problems with one of Microsoft's hot fixes and HP printers ( KB908531 ). If I'm wrong in this, then I apologize to you. If I'm right the drivers that you questioned others about are the VIA zip file. Hope this helps!:)

Are you saying in the original post to delete these items?
    USB root hub
    USB root hub
VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller
VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller

  11. oli

    oli Corporal

That is me. I didn't mention the printer as the original problem because I felt HP gave me the correct information and that is all I really needed, and so thats why I am looking for the drivers.
So now you mention VIA zip file, do I go ahead with the VIA zip file first or start deleting those items mentioned? And how do I acquire the VIA zip file?
    Thanks

  12. Novice

    Novice MajorGeek

Yes, I actually meant to delete those items in Device Manager and reboot. Windows will detect these on boot and reinstall the necessary drivers. This is the VIA zip file that I was referring to ftp://ftp.fic.com.tw/motherboard/driver/1stUtilities_v1.27/USB2, as FIC lists these as drivers for your board. But before installing them, an Everest report would be nice as to missing components.:)

Thanks, for standing by. I just got around to trying the patch. After it was downloaded,(I didn't have a choice of where to save it, it saves it to a temp download area) I clicked on the setup and I received a error message saying:
    The path C:\docume~1\owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\ARC283\Setup.exe is invalid.

Try changing your download directory, to one you have created , download the file again and then review your download and install the drivers...but I'm curious, why don't you just install the motherboard chipset drivers and your USB ports should automatically be enabled...Windows XP has generic USB drivers that should work with any motherboard. Good luck

A couple of question. How do I change the dowload directory,(i use izarc) and how do I download the motherboard chipset drivers?
Oh, by the way, thanks for jumping in and giving a hand.

The file from VIA is a zip file. To change where the files are extracted to, just creat a new folder in my docucments, and and accept the "new folder" name. WinZip gives a choice of where to extract the files to when unarchiving. Choose browse, C:, My Documents, and select "new folder". Then the contents of the zip file will be unzipped in this folder.

As for your motherboard chipset drivers, they are the VIA zip file that I linked to in one of the posts at the beginning of this thread, and are from FIC, your motherboard manufacturer. This will be an extremely long download if you are on dialup internet service as the file is almost 10 megs. Follow the same advice as in the above paragraph for unzipping as it make the files easier to find.

Just another matter of curiosity, did you delete everything under Universal Serial Bus in Device Manager as I suggested early on, and reboot? This will not harm your system, and most systems use generic Windows drivers for the controller and ports. This could fix your problem, but I can understand your being wary of doing so. :)

  21. oli

    oli Corporal

Okay, I dowloaded a trial version of winzip just so I could get this file in the recommended location and named the new folder via.zip.
I went through the whole setup.exe process, and I don't see any change.
Should I now at this point be reinstalling the printer software?

  22. Novice

    Novice MajorGeek

Before you do anything else, please open Device Manager and see if you have a PCI - USB controller listed! If you do, then the chipset update was sucessful, if not, then there is still problems.:)

Universal Serial Bus Controllers may not list PCI-USB if your USB ports are integrated into the motherboard...you will have to update your motherboard chipset drivers to enable the USB integration...If it's a PCI installed USB component card then separate drivers for that USB component card would have to be installed and they would have to correspond to the specific manufacturer of this hardware.

This is what have under the expanded USB tab:
    USB root hub
    USB root hub
VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller
VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller

  27. Doomster

It looks like you have DOUBLE USB driver info...delete or remove the dupicated entry..eg. USB root hub and the VIA Rev5 or USB Universal Host Controller...your motherboard usually only reads ONE reference to these entries...it should read 1 USB root hub and 1 VIA Rev5 etc. should only be present...try this and report...

Went to try and install the printer, and this is what happened.
    A screen popped up

XThis item does not meet one or more of the minimum requirements needed to install this product.
    The installation cannot continue

  30. Doomster

    Doomster Private E-2

When I wrote , delete the DOUBLE entries, I meant uninstall ONE reference to each separate component, not ALL...try rebooting and reinstalling your PLUG and PLAY USB hardware drivers...
Duplicate hardware reference drivers in DEVICE MANAGER are an inherent flaw or bug in the OS and ONE of the duplicated entries should be REMOVED from the list...Note of Caution...always check the PROPERTIES for each separate hardware reference listing, to make sure that your are not removing a valuable hardware driver....sometimes Windows XP will give a referenced installed hardware component the SAME name as another, so checking PROPERTIES, for each separate reference will eliminate accidental disabling of installed hardware...I hope this helps...

It looks like I needed a duplicate of each, otherwise I would not have gotten this error message.

Thanks for the suggestion. Yes I did try another plug, thats one of the first things I thought of, but of course for me it just couldn't be that easy an answer. I have had this thougt for a while now, is it possible the cable it self is bad? I did ask HP tech support that question and they didn't think so. They said I didn't have a USB composite device listed there. Also when I plug in the USB cable , I am supposed to get a pop up window saying "Found New Hardware" but that didn't happen and doesn't happen now. I haven't forgotten your problem, as it is intriguing, and have been researching it. Do any USB devices work on this computer? For instance, a thumb drive. Have the USB ports worked or been checked prior to failed printer installation?

Do you have Microsoft KB908531 installed? Look under Add/Remove progams in Control Panel to check. If it is listed, remove it, reboot and try the printer installation again. This hotfix was know to have caused printer issues.

I know that you probably won't do this, but it can help if there is an IRQ conflict . Boot into safe mode, and delete everything under the Universal Serial Device tab, reboot. On the reboot, Windows will detect and reinstall the necessary drivers for your USB devices.

I don't have another USB device. I do have a digital camera that I leave plugged into the computer, but I don't know if that is considered a USB device. I am assuming the USB ports worked because my present printer worked up until just recently and so did another printer prior to the HP printer.

I will look at that when I get home tonight.

I do have some experience with Safe Mode in the past with older computers, so I will consider it. Why do I need to go into Safe Mode to do the deletion, can't I just delete as I did with the duplications, and then reboot?

    I didn't find KB908531.
I did the safe mode and deleted everything under the USD tab, and rebooted. Everything came back.
Tried to reinstall the printer again, and as usual it stopped at the cable connection.

The reason for Safe Mode was that in one of the articles that I read while researching, doing so in Safe Mode supposedly makes Windows reallocate the IRQ. So much for that as it didn't help.

I asked about another USB device such as a Thumb Drive to see if the USB ports were actually working, and to see if it was just a problem with the printer software. I finally figured out what the HP tech meant by Composite Device, in that there wasn't a tab for USB printing support in Device Manager being shown.

Does your Digital Camera still work as in uploading pictures?

You reinstalled your motherboard chipset drivers ( that should have taken care of any corrupted driver issue ), you've deleted and removed in both safe and normal mode, but still nothing works.

What exactly happened prior to the USB ports not working? A Microsoft update, virus, or anything that you remember?

It seems strange that HP could diagnose the problem and offer to fix it for a price. A restore of you system would put it in the same condition as when you bought it and everything should work as it did originally.

No, my digital camera indicates that the USB disconnected

We didn't use the printer all the often, so I can't really say if we download any new program just prior to the problem. Perhaps the Microsoft update did occur roughly about that time.

Still researching your USB problem, and have a question. What was the USB error that Registry Mechanic fixed? Knowing this might help more than anything else!

I've searched VIA, HP, and Microsoft for answers/fixes to this problem and still haven't found anything that applies, but do have a few questions. 1. Is USB support enabled in your BIOS? 2. Was your camera plugged in when you deleted your USB devices in safe mode? 3. Have you tried right clicking on the USB devices in Device Manager and clicking the update driver option? 4. Are there any devices that show as having a problem in Device Manager? 5. Did your computer have USB 2.0? 6. Are the USB ports enabled? 7. Have you tried Windows update? Not the feature that only downloads the security patches/fixes, but the other that scans your computer's hardware and offers driver updates?

Please pardon all the questions, but I hate to let something like this get the best of me!:)

The question regarding the Registry Mechanic, how can I find out what was the USB error?
How can I find out if the USB support is enabled in BIOS?
I did the update driver in Device Manager and I got the results back as saying there are no newer devices to download.
How do I check if I have a USB 2.0? Are you saying - Driver Version? If so it is 5.1.2600.2180
    USB ports are enabled.
    Will do a Windows Update.
    Keep the questions coming.

To check your BIOS read this link http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...en&product=90387&dlc=en&docname=bph07110#N424

Concerning USB 2.0, that is a revison number. USB 2.0 is much faster than USB 1.1 and HP gave no details concerning whether your computer was so equipped or not, so I thought that I'd ask in case you remembered.

As for Registry Mechanic, it is an app that I don't use, so I have no idea. You made a reference to it fixing an error, so I was curious as to what the error was and whether it was USB related. Most programs such as this give the user an option to back up the registry before making changes.

    Back to searching!:)
