USB port driver

Try unplugging your camera that is always plugged in and try replacing your USB printer cable with a new USB 2 cable, these two things might work, otherwise try updating your motherboard drivers from the HP website. The HP Support Downloads section should not cost you any money...If HP tech support is asking you for payment, to download an updated driver file, then they are wrong, that is why they call this a SUPPORT website...if they want people to continue to use their products then they should do what their website says...SUPPORT, meaning customer support and NO charges or fees should occur...otherwise this is a greedy decision on their part and is not a proper business practise...

I just wanted to say that the camera is only connected when I am working with photos, and thats been a few months now since I have done any photo work.
HP support did try to help me up until the discovery of the missing driver and then they told me since my printer is more than a year old it is out of warranty.
I agree with you that I shouldn't have to pay a fee.
Will look into purchasing another cable.

I've been to that site early on with no results, and this the site where I got to an online chat with the HP people.
I was thinking about what you suggested about replacing the USB cable to the printer. Are you thinking that the cable might be bad? If so, why not the cable that also goes to the camera?

If you are having connection problems, with the camera, then yes replace the cable, otherwise remember to disconnect the camera before you update your USB cables, then once your USB and printer is working, plug your camera back in...

While not wishing to disagree with anyone, I hate to see you waste money on cables that are more than likely fine, as the problem that you are experiencing is that your USB support has somehow been disabled.

Two things that I would like for you to try. First, uninstall Everest from the Add/Remove Programs tab in Control Panel and reboot. Go into Device Manager and check and see if there is still a yellow exclamtion point by Other Devices, and if so, what the error message says.

Second. Go into Device Manager and right click on the USB Root Hubs. Click on the Properties tab, and then click on the Power/Power Options tab which should be the last on the right. If the option to suspend power when idle is checked uncheck it. Do this for both your USB Root Hubs and reboot. Check your camera then and see if it still says USB support disabled. If not, try installing your printer again. Before doing this, please disconnect your camera.

You might also read this link, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/895962/en-us,
as it deals with USB issues such as yours.

As for the USB drivers that your system is loading, they are the current ones offered by Microsoft, and that is why they couldn't be updated. I'm using an older system that has a three week old installation of XP Home Edition with SP2 with all updates and a VIA chipset on the motherboard, and my USB drivers are ver. 5.1.2600.2180 - same as yours.

I've visited two USB specifc forums researching your problem, and it isn't uncommon. We have already been through the checklist of things to do and try with no success, and the only option that was left was the reinstallation of Windows, and that fixed the majority of the problems.

Your problem seems to be Windows related, and not tied to the motherboard as the correct drivers are being loaded by your system. If it were me, and I wanted to have my USB ports working, then I would reinstall Windows, but that is just me and my opinion. Hope this helps!:)

I didn't have problems with the USB port for the camera until just now when I was asked to check if other USB ports are working. I think it highly unlikely that 2 cables would go bad at the same time, but it is very very remotely possible.

I am waiting for microsoft page to download the information for making Registry changes, but I guess there is a problem because it has not transferred the data after 5 min. As far as reloading WinXp there is a problem there, because, when we bought the HP computer it didn't come with the CD. So now, if the Registry changes don't work, then, I would have to purchase the CD.

Just one question, what happens to programs I have on the computer that I have that don't have disks for, such as NOD 32 and PS?
    Thanks

If you choose the destructive reformat option, they will be gone for sure! There is also the chance that a recovery from Windows will do the same. Probably not what you wanted to hear, but just being honest!:)

Is there a way to save those programs, some were very difficult to get?
    Thanks

I can sympathize with the "hard to get" problem, as it has happened to me in the past. You can copy the program folders, but this won't include the many entries in the Registry and other places when a program is installed, and as a rule doesn't work. I just read your new thread on moving data to another partition.

A cheaper or more economical solution to your problem might be to go to your local computer store or WalMart and buy a USB 2.0 PCI card. These generally have four ports and are in the 15-25 dollar range. Installing this card would make Windows see new hardware and install new drivers for it, as we never did figure out whether your computer came with USB 2.0 capability. This should give you four working USB ports. Just a thought that might help!:)

Thanks, guys, I went with putting in another board. I was expecting to see a similar board in there and I was going to pull it out and discard it, but I didn't see it. I think its part of the main board.
    Well alls well that ends.
