I have a rio mp3 player that I download music to...Well all of a sudden my music manager does not recognize that it is plugged in to my usb port, but when it is plugged in, power goes to the mp3 player and the player recognizes that it is hooked up to the port. Oh yes, and with my wifes player it is the same story. I tried uninstalling the port and then when I ran the plug and play it got reinstalled with the same problem. Windows recognizes that there is a problem with the port, but I can't remember what the exact wording was that it said of it. I will figure that out right now. Any help would be much appreciated, as I may try to understand computers, but that doesn't change the fact that my computers problems continue to outsmart me almost every time....

my specs---I don't even know if I'm attaching these the right way

Now this is just a thought but try reinstalling any kind of drivers for both the usb and the mp3 player. You can google your usb drivers Im sure. But hey, this is just a shot in the dark.

Device manager calls these usb ports "unknown device" and when I tried to update the driver it said no better version of driver could be found and when I tried to roll back the driver it said no driver files have been backed up for this device.

do you know if youre using usb 2.0?

  5. A'sfan

    A'sfan Private E-2

by the way, did my specs get posted correctly...I am even having some issues with understanding how to do that.

yes they did. Try downloading usb 2.0 and installing it, Im 95% sure that that is what sp2 included was 2.0 compatability. Give it a whirl.

hmm...how can I tell? is that the type of usb cable, or how updated it is?

yeah you are being helpful, and yes I do have usb 2.0

Then go ahead and download the drivers from where ever you can find them, google will have em, and get back to me after you install them again. Good Luck!

I have windows update so it should update all my drivers automatically shouldn't it? when I tried to update the drivers through device manager it said no better or newer (I can't remember which) version could be found. would it be wise to uninstall?

    HuntingWolf Private E-2

Well in your case your not looking for a newer or better version, your looking for one that works. Your drive could have become corupted, it has happened to me before. But I did indeed fail to mention to uninstall and reinstall. If all else fails try contacting windows about the problem, that has worked for me before. They can probably send you the latest drivers or atleast point you in the right direction.

XP needs SP1 or more to enable USB2.0 support.

You have SP2 so it should be fine.

To check if you have USB2.0, under Universal Serial Devices it will say "Enhanced" or "Hi-Speed".

Yours probably won't say that until you get them installed properly.

I suggest you start by updating your motherboard and nForce chipset drivers.

    nForce drivers available HERE.

I didn't leave I just had to go to bed! universal serial device does say enhanced, and when I get home from work I will try as you say insomniac. thanks guys for your help. Insomniac--what do I download on that second link that you posted--the motherboard link? do I download all that they offer? thanks

I would download the nForce driver in the first link.

Then download just the last two in the MSI link, but only if you have Promise Serial-ATA RAID, otherwise you don't need them.

    A'sfan Private E-2

ok, I downloaded the nvidia driver, but the usb port/ports still do not work. How do I find out if I have Promise Serial-ATA RAID ? By the way, when I hook up the mp3 player, it recognizes that it is hooked up and it receives power, the computer just won't recognize anything hooked up to it.

The Promise driver won't fix the USB issue. Not a huge deal for now.

In Device Manager, is the USB Controller listed with no errors or ? or !.

If it has an error, what exactly does it say?

You can also try uninstalling the USB Controller from Device Manager, reboot and let Windows hopefully do the rest.

  21. A'sfan

    A'sfan Private E-2

ok, there are no ! or ? or anything that says error, but there are 4 usb icons that are listed as unkown devices under the universal serial bus controller icon. In the midst of me trying to figure out this problem, a couple of days ago I unplugged my rio while I was running everest program or whatever it is, and a window popped up that said that windows had detected that one of the usb ports had malfunctioned, and on everest, one of the four usb icons that are named "unknown device" appeared in bold. I then tried to uninstall that "unknown device" in device manager, clicked on plug and play, momentarily it said new hardware found, and wham-o, nothing had changed. That is the last time that window has popped up. The next day I was looking in the safely remove hardware icon down on the bottom in the system tray I think it is called, and unintentionally I think I removed the usb port that was showing that had my rio player hooked up to it. Now why the computer recognized that my player was hooked up to the usb wire, I don't know. I unintentionally deleted it before I could ever find out. These are the best details of my problem that I can recall right now, I hope this isn't to vague. All this being said, if I uninstall my usb ports, will windows reinstall, and what ones do I uninstall? Do I uninstall the "unknown devices"? Thanks for any additional help.

What I would do is unplug everything USB that you don't need until this is sorted.

The less stuff plugged in, the more chance of problems.

Then uninstall the USB Controller/s from Device Manager and reboot.

Windows should do the rest. You shouldn't have to do a thing.

There should be NO unknown devices or any errors in Device Manager.

I have one "standard enhanced PCI to USB host controller" and two "standard openHCD USB host controllers" then USB "composite device" " mass storage device" "printing support" "root hub" and "Unknown device". which one do I uninstall?

  24. A'sfan

    A'sfan Private E-2

ok, I unplugged usb devices and when I did a window came up that said "one of the usb devices attatched to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it" it showed a picture with usb root hub on top with 6 ports below it all called "unknown device" and the one that supposedly malfunctioned was in bold. It also said "try reconnecting the device. If windows still does not recognize it, replace the device" I double clicked the "unknown device" that was in bold and it brought up device manager and told about this usb port, nothing new though. so should I delete the root hub or the ones that say host controller next to them?

Unplug everything you don't need, and whatever USB entry in Device Manager that has an error or is unknown, then uninstall and reboot.

  26. A'sfan

    A'sfan Private E-2

I uninstalled all "unknown devices" rebooted, and now they are back as......unknown devices..

Some history on this PC. (I haven't re-read the post, so I may ask the same questions)

Have these ports ever worked, and if so, when did the problem occur?

Is USB enabled in the Bios?

Double-click the USB Hubs and Hosts and see if there is anything improper listed in the Power and Resources tabs etc.

If possible, a screenshot of Device Manager would be good.

*history of the pc: Report march 2.txt
*history of the problem: I'm going about my life like a regular joe, transferring music from my pc to my rio mp3 player via my usb cord when one day about one week ago I hooked my player up to the usb cord, started up my music manager program, and the program wouldn't recognize that the player was hooked up to the usb. The player recognizes that it is hooked up to the usb but not vice-versa. I went into device manager and it showed that some of the usb devices were unknown devices. I went into the everest program and it was the same story. for the sake of space the rest of the story is posted like 4 of my posts ago.
*Yes, the ports did used to work.
*USB enabled in the BIOS. could you please explain how to check and I will let you know.
*Nothing improper listed in power and resource tabs of the USB hubs and hosts.
*Screenshot of device manager. I've always wondered how you guys did that, now is my chance to learn. Could you please explain how to do this and I will post one. Thank you for all your time so far!

Just open Device Manager on your desktop, press Print Scrn on your keyboard, and this will copy it to your clipboard.

Then paste the image in your graphics application and save it as a graphic file. (it would be good to resize or crop it so it's not big, but it's not essential)

Then Go Advanced here, and attach the file by browsing and uploading, then posting as normal.

Bios shouldn't be an issue if it worked before, so there is no point going through it.

I can't seem to get my Prt Scr button to work (yes I'm that dumb) but can I accomplish the same thing by printing to file?

    Not really.

You need a screenshot of Device Manager.

I just wanted to check all the entries in there in case we aren't communicating or understanding each other.

Don't know how much more I can add to this I'm sorry.

    That's better.

Double-click the Unknown Devices and see if you can get any extra info from the driver, resources tabs (whatever) etc.

If you can find out what the driver it's using is, or if there is a resource problem or whatever, then that may help.

after I try to update the driver it says that there isn't a better match, if I try to roll back to a previous driver it says no driver files have been backed up for this device. When I troubleshoot, I go all the way through and it says the problem can't be solved through troubleshooter. grrrrrrrrrrrr

Wow, whatever kind of driver it is, it sure is old! 7/1/2001, sheesh!
    ::does some googling::

    Found something of interest.
Try the top file here, http://www.usb-drivers.com/companies/667.htm , might work. It says all XP windows drivers.

Oh and sorry for disapearing, Navy called me off for some training. Still trying to help.

EDIT: Did you try an aleternative driver viewer, there are some here http://majorgeeks.com/downloads28.html .
