USB Ports "not responding"

    Hello,

Just had something happened that hasn't happened to me before. I converted an older HP computer (with enough horsepower for XP) from Win98 to XP. The USB ports (2) were working under Win98 but not under XP. So the first thing I did was to check out the "Device Mgr" which showed they are o.k. (This device is working properly).

I tried USB cameras, USB scanner, USB "Flash Drive" and none responded. These are USB ports built into the Motherboard and I pulled the case apart to see if anything was disconnected but it appeared to be o.k.

By the way, this wasn't an "upgrade" but rather a "Clean Install".

I can't get passed the HP flash screen to boot to the setup BIOS and I've tried every key combination I've ever known i.e. "del", "F2", "F10".

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Thanks!

Do you have legacy USB Devices , (or variant), enabled in BIOS?

Thanks for the response g1lgam3sh but one of my problems is I can't get the BIOS setup screen to come up. I've tried the following key combinations:

F2;F10 & DEL. I'll try ESC, and CTRL-ESC next but I can't answer your question until I can do this.

I'm doing some work on a neighbor's computer and I didn't write down the model number but it's an older HP. Probably 5 years old. I'll get the model number later today and look at the HP website for "clues".

    Thanks again.

This particular desktop HP4458 was not intended for XP but I do have one more question.

Although the "on-board" USB ports won't work, what if I purchased a USB PCI card? Would that give me USB ports that wouldn't conflict?

    Thanks!

I use a VIA 4 port USB 2.0 card and have done for a while with different OS's, never given me any problems.
