USB ports unresponsive.

I'm working on an HP Pavilion that I got from the auction. It came loaded with Windows 7.During POST it freezes up and displays the word "keyboard". I tried other keyboards. The lights on the keyboard and mouse blink once. Then nothing. Cannot access cmos because I can't use the keyboard. I've tried each USB port. Same. I tried unplugging the USB ports from the motherboard and re plugging them. still nothing. I think the MB will need to be replaced. Any other suggestions?

 

Check the CMOS battery. After turning off the PC, remove it and check the voltage with a digital multimeter. If it isn't rated at 3 volts, replace it.

 

I replaced the CMOS battery with a new one and still, I get a blink of lights on the keyboard and mouse in POST, but then a message of "keyboard", and no response further.

 

Does it never boot up to the desktop? If it does, does the mouse work? If so, have you tried to use the onscreen keyboard?

If it doesn't boot up normally, have you tried to boot it into safe mode?

 

If possible, try a PS2 keyboard.

 

Forgive me It's an HP Pavillion p2 - 1127Cb desktop computer.

 

I cannot try a PS2 keyboard as it only has ports for USB.

 

I used a live cd of Knoppix, and I still got no response. The keyboard only blinks once, then a "keyboard" error message. The USB ports are not responsive.

 

No PS2 slots with this mb

 

This is a long shot.
Check if the motherboard has a header for additional USB ports.

 

There are no additional usb ports available on the main board.

 

Not USB ports, but headers/connectors to which you connect a cable that has 1 or 2 female USB connectors at the other end. The USB ports at the front of the tower case are connected to the motherboard in this way. Have a look at the third and forth images at the following link.

I'm asking because $3.99 is a lot less than the cost of a new motherboard.

 

I've found used MB's going from $43 to $73 and up on E-Bay.

Can't getinto BIOS. First thing when you turn on the PC you get "keyboard" error, and nothing will respond. I cannot get into BIOS.

 

thanks for responding, but when the machine is turned on it only displays a message saying "keyboard". I can't use the keyboard, so i can't go to CMOS.
