I have just upgraded Win2k to WinXP Pro. When i insert one of my flash drives into the usb port. A message comes up saying i have inserted a High Speed Usb into a non high speed port. And nothing comes up. I even went to My Computer and it doesnt show on the list. What is the problem and how can i fix it?

You may need to locate and install the updated USB 2.0 driver for XP. It will likley be available from the MB Mfg. Usually though, the 2K and XP drivers are compatible.

You might also uninstall the USB ports and allow XP to detect them again. You should remove any USB devices before doing this.

How would you uninstall USB ports? and what is MB Mfg?

    Sorry for the confusion.

MB is MotherBoard and Mfg is Manufacturer.

If they don't have updated drivers try this:
Start-> Run-> devmgmt.msc and hit enter. This is the Device Manager
Near the bottom of the list will be the Universal Serial Bus controllers (USB). expand that by clicking on the + . Then right click and uninstall each of the devices listed until the catagory is empty. Then reboot the machine and Windows will redetect the devices and install drivers. It may ask to go online to look for newer drivers. If you have a Broadband Connection, you may want to allow that.

Let us know it you get it working.

Well i tried that and rebooting with no luck. Whenever i plug my USB flash drive in, it says that i have plugged it into the "non-highspeed usb host controller". This is very odd since before i got WinXp Pro USB worked perfeclty...Does anyone know how to get a highspeed host controller?

It means that possibly the 2.0 drivers either need to be downloaded from the website for the motherboard (if system was not a OEM), or possibly the USB interface on the motherboard is a 1.x USB interface, and not a 2.0 interface.

If the computer is a OEM machine, who made it, and what model, so we can better help you. Also when you go into System/Hardware, and look in Devices, does it show a "Enhanced" controller under USB devices?

  8. To get a highspeed connection you need usb 2.0 ports. If you do not have those you can usually pick up a pci card with 4 ports of 2.0 on it and get the 2.0 speed for $30 bucks. Thats how you get high speed USB.

XP on it's own does not support USB 2.0 (Hi Speed USB).

You need SP1 or SP2 as they contain the drivers.

Your motherboard also requires drivers for USB 2.0 to work.

I suggest you start by first making sure you are using the latest drivers for your motherboard.

To check if you have USB 2.0, go into Device Manager (Start, Run and type in devmgmt.msc then OK) and under Universal Serial Bus Controllers it should say "Enhanced" or "Hi Speed".

Obviously i dont have "Enhanced or Hi Speed" This topic was for me to ask how to get those two. Yeah i know i need SP2 look at my "Windows Update" topic.

It is possible, if it was a older Motherboard, that it did not have USB 2.0 onboard. Everest may clarify if the controller is capable of being a 2.0, or is just generic 1.0.

  14. If the case is that you only have usb 1.1 you should use my suggestion previously posted.

I'm going by the information YOU supplied, and it's not obvious, otherwise you'd know the answer.

Read my replies if you want to know how to get USB 2.0. You need SP1 or SP2.

You said it used to work before, so it's not a hardware issue, but a driver issue.

Insomniac is right. This is a driver issue. You need top get either SP! or SP2 and maybe a driver from the MB Mfg. Without the right drivers it will not run as fast.

So what is the point of this post if you knew?

Anyway, I'm done here, this post has been answered.

Not very hard to guess the point...it was to see if there was an alternate. And at that point i obviously did not know it was caused by Windows update...
