    Hi plodr,

thanks for the reply. i downloaded and ran MBSA. it downloaded and installed ms security updates for the current sp2. is this enough as a step prior to installing sp3?

yes i'm aware of the announcement. i'm getting a modern system before that.

my problem now is i don't have a burner to put sp3 on it. is there a way i can install sp3 without a cd or usb?

I'm confused. You want to guard USB but you don't have USB. I think you need to clarify what you have hardware-wise and what you want to do exactly.

ok plodr, i've upgraded to sp3 like i said i was going to. the post should now be:

what usb guard software do you recommend for a win xp sp3 32-bit user?

I don't use USB system based protection as I'm the only one who uses this computer, but here are a few suggestions for real-time scanners that protect your computer against infected USB flash drives:

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/usb_protector.html
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/bitdefender_usb_immunizer.html
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/autorun_eater.html

If you're instead looking to "immunize" your USB flash drives against autorun viruses on foreign computers, you can use a low tech approach that doesn't require any continuously running antiviral program. Unfortunately, I don't have a URL for that file (and wouldn't post it in this forum even if I did). Try to google: "ProtectDriveFromAutorunVirus"

thank you so much rustysavage. why wouldn't you post the url to the file? is it against forum rules to do so?

i'm using kaspersky IS 2012. does any of the programs you recommend conflict with it?

I turn off autorun. If I put a CD, DVD or USB stick in a port that has malware on it(exe program) rather than it automatically running, I get a menu of choices. One of the choices is to view the files on the CD, DVD, USB stick.
It's probably overkill on my part because with my husband and I as senior citizens with no kids nor grandkids, are the only two using the computers. But I'd rather keep the computers protected.

thank you plodr for the idea. i like it. how do i turn it off?

someone once told me if i wanted to prevent autorun malware from kicking off, i should access usb drives from Folders instead of by double clicking the drive. someone else suggested Explore instead of Open.do these two ways actually work?

There's a program called USBWriteProtector. It's from FreewareFiles.com, one of the very few sites I trust for downloads.

If you're using Windows XP, then see the following page for instructions

mdonah, thanks! the requirements specify sp2. would it work for sp3 too?

    rustysavage, thanks for the link!

Yes, SP2 is the minimum requirement.
