    Hi

I have recently bought an EMTEC C250 4gb USB memory stick which works fine on my laptop but when I insert it into my desktop the install new hardware wizard appears and goes through the motions but can't find the driver. It comes up with an error code 1 in the device manager. I can see that it is inserted in device manager but it is accompanied by the dreaded yellow question mark. I have tried all the uninstall, disable features, I have also done spybot, adaware and anti virus checks, nothing has been found. I believe that it doesn't like the XP drivers, but the manufacturer do not provide drivers past WIN98. I am running windows XP home edition on a emachines 4250 with 512mb ram, 3.06ghz intel celeron processor. There are 5 USB ports, none of them work. This is not just this USB stick as I have a 1gb LG stick that has the same problem, however my older LG stick (which is exactly the same model) works fine, this was first used 2 years ago and can still be used today.

If anyone has any advice I would be grateful, I have run a Hijackthis log incase it is something underhand causing the issues and have taken screenshots of all the properties and process when I plug the stick in.

What can I do? I'm in despair and don't have a clue as to what to try next.

I seriously doubt that a virus or malware has anything to do with the USB devices not working with the EMachine PC. The fact that an older one works on the PC, but the newer ones don't tells me that it is probably a USB1.1 vs USB2.0 type of scenario. The newer devices may be USB2.0 only, while the older may be USB1.1/2.0 or 2.0 with 1.1 compatibility. So, first thing to do would be to enter the BIOS and look for a USB setting that gives you the option of USB1.1 + 2.0 or something similar. To enter the BIOS, you'd press F1 or F2 or maybe F10 or Del right when you first power on and see the EMachine logo screen. I'm not sure exactly which key it is 'cuz different brands use a different key. You might see a message like "Press <Del> to enter Setup". Anyway- poke around looking for the setting I mentioned. If/when you find it, make the appropriate changes, save your settings and exit and boot to Windows and see if that helped. If not, or there is no BIOS setting, download the chipset drivers from this link and install them, then restart the PC when the install has finished. Hopefully that will solve the problem.
:-D Good luck! Let us know how it goes!

(BTW- I couldn't find a model 4250 at the EMachines web site so I had to do some other research to locate the Intel chipset drivers; most EMachine PCs have a letter in the model like T6258 or S2485 etc )

EDIT- I just had another thought.... when you insert the USB device and the new hardware wizard opens, try typing c:\windows\inf as the location of the driver and see if that works....

    Hi

Nothing worked I'm afraid, I gave up the idea of trying to figure everything out, however I had a back up of all my docs so decided to use the recovery disc and start again.

Thanks for your help and advice though.

    Regards

    Phil
