Does anyone know of a usb wireless adapter that will work on linux? I mean a new one (ie. current - not a model from 3 years ago) that I can go and buy at Staples or Best Buy or Microcenter.

I'm quite new to linux and am a little unsure of my ability to do the ndiswrapper procedure correctly. Thanks.

You need to then consider forgetting the USB and check out the possibility of a few sites to be sure what you are looking for.

    Linux-compatible wireless USB adaptor

Here is a pro Ubuntu site

Here is one on Fedora Core 5

Rule of thumb is don't expect straight answers from Best Buy on Linux.
newegg.com will be a better approach. Ask before you buy.

Thanks for the reply and the links.

I think you're right. I'm going to forget about it for the time being. The pages I've read on the topic appear to be beyond my scope right now, but it looks like many people are working this issue.

Thanks for post, you hit on the major reason I do not have more experience with Linux. The "kids" desktop computer is set up with an ethernet line to a D-Link wireless modem, the rest connect to the wireless modem through Ativa Wireless adapters, and the laptop on a Broadcom Adapter, couldn't run Windows 98 wireless either due to USB 2.0 support and a wireless adapter with drivers for Windows 98.

Some day I have to find my Atmel 505A Dongle and get wireless going again here.
    :D

You see this is the difference in simply turning on a system, and actually learning what puts it all together. You learn quickly in Linux to pay attention to what kind of chipset is in every device.

And in doing so, you many times find someone who has the same system and has it running perfectly.
