I'd like to use my old Dell (XP) with no Internet connection, just as a backup. The CRT monitor that came with it broke; I'd like to get another CRT, not buy new flat one (I like the old monitors). In setting it up, would I just plug it in, connect the cables and install an OS. I've upgraded my latest machine to Win 7 but don't think I can use it on more than one computer; I might have to buy Vista. Thanks for any help you all can give me in being able to use my old PC just as a backup. ec (I wasn't sure which subject heading to post this in.)

Plugging in the cables and installing an OS is just about all that's involved, besides finding and installing drivers for your chipset, audio, video, and any peripherals you might attach to the system.
Your old system likely has a sticker on it somewhere with a valid XP key. If you can find an OS cd for the same version of XP you were running, you can use the key on that sticker to activate your copy of XP.

    * Check Craigslist or used PC stores. You should be able to find a used 17" CRT in decent condition for $25 or less.

    * If running XP/Vista/7 it shouldn't be too hard to add either a wired Internet connection (10/100 PCI internal Ethernet card, about $10-$15) or a USB Wi-Fi adapter (about $20-$30, but check individual model reviews before buying). If doing the USB Wi-Fi thing, get a 6' USB ext. cable (about $3) and use it to place the stick at desktop level or above for better reception.

    Hope this helps. :)

Welcome to Major Geeks ellenmc! :)

If I read and understood your post correctly, the only thing wrong with the Dell is a broken monitor? CRT monitors are plug and play items and shouldn't pose any problem, when you get a replacement. You shouldn't have to load an OS just to replace a monitor. :)

I was going to add--if you currently have a monitor on your Win7 machine you could just hook up the old machine to the monitor and attach a keyboard and mouse and see what state it is in before purchasing a second monitor.

I have a very old Dell Optiplex running@700MHz so you know it is ancient! It runs windows 2000 and has never been on the internet, in windows. I have run linux live CDs and been on the internet that way.
There has been no problem connecting several LCD monitors to this old computer. LCDs are so much easier on the electric and way easier to cart around. I currently have a 19" widescreen attached to it. You should consider an LCD. I've never needed to install monitor software; it has been plug and play, even in windows 2K.

Since I knew it was not going to be on the internet nor part of my home network, I removed all the security programs. Any little speed gain I can get on a 700MHz dog is appreciated.

Antiques Roadshow can't have it! I have my flatbed scanner and the oldest printer hooked up to it. That is our scanning computer.
I have two other newer working printers. My hubby has one working on a printer switch box because his two computers are hooked up to a KVM with sound switch.
My upstairs computers (3) print wirelessly to the newest printer. Since it all works, I'm not ready to buy an AIO until something dies.
