Last week I reinstalled Windows XP Pro on my laptop. I had a heck of a time since I have no CLUE as to what I am doing....and there are still a few things that I have questions about. My system is a Dell Inspiron 5100 Pentium IV, 2.66 Ghz and 512 mb of Ram. It has an internal wireless card mpci 1300, and I am using a Linksys WRT54G Router with Broadband internet.

I set up three user accounts on this laptop, but when I turn it on they don't show like they used to, instead I get a black screen with a log in box with my name on it. It asks for a password and none of my usual passwords work, so I am 99% sure I didn't assign one to it somewhere. It allows you to log in without the password though, so I can still use the laptop.

I checked to see if somehow the user accounts did not take during the set up, but when I checked the Control Panel under User Accounts I see that they are still there...along with something from microsoft called ASP.net, which I think I may have downloaded while trying to install all of the drivers that didn't come on my driver disc (especially the wireless card driver) from the Dell Downloads page.

At the time that I did the re-install of the Windows XPP, I also changed the way my Linksys Router settings were set in order to increase security (I now have a network key number). Now I am wondering if that is why the start up doesn't automaticly show the user accounts screen?

In the user accounts box click on "change the way users log on or off" and make sure the Welcome screen box is checked. This should make it so that you can see all of the users names when you reboot. Post back if this does not work. :)

Thanks! At first when I tried to do it, my McAfee kept sending me some sort of message about an unknown script trying to run. When I allowed it, it grayed out my options to change the way users log on and there was a message about needing to uninstall the client service network of netware. I wasn't too sure but looked it up on google, and it seemed safe to uninstall so I did that and now I am good to go.
