Have a friend that wants to upgrade his RAM but doesn't have any info on his current chip other than some weird serial numbers on the side of the stick. Is there a simple program, thats reliable, he can install to identify his current 512mb stick?

I have a bad feeling if he just goes to the store and gets a generic 512mb stick, the clock speeds will be off and it will cause all sorts of problems.

    Hi Blues

Yes Crucials memory scanner is accurate http://www.crucial.com/ ( no need to buy from them but the info will help on getting the right ram from your favoured supplier )

Edit: Ment to also post that Everest can give good results on Ram specs, even to mem timings.

Try using the freeware system info tool PC Wizard 2008. It's easy to use and will provide tons of info about every aspect of your PC, including the RAM. I attached a screen shot to help clarify....
    1. Click the 2nd icon under the 'Hardware' tab on the left. It's the 'main board' icon with the green arrow.
    2. The right pane will populate with some info. Click on 'Physical Memory'.
    3. The lower right pane will populate with any info that can be found about the memory installed. Scroll through the list for all the available details. You can right-click and copy all the info to the clipboard or paste it into Notepad and save it as a text file for future reference.

    I hope this helps!
