    Hi there,

My friend got scammed by the Microsoft Phone Scam. English isn't her first language, so she doesn't really know what she let them do or what information she has given them, and I'm unable to determine whether she has just read out numbers from her Event Log or given them access to her machine.

I told her to turn this computer off immediately and change all her passwords from a different computer which she has done.

This machine hasn't been connected to the internet since, and I don't particularly want to until it's clean again.

I've run through the guide with it disconnected and attach the scans.

AVG (which is out of date) keeps trying to kill malicious stuff (VPN9) which might be something they put on there.

    Thanks in advance.

These scams usually end with the caller convincing the victim to buy some software. What issues are you having? And did she buy something they were selling?

She says that the guy said it was £100 for an instant fix, or £150 for a lifetime protection.

She replied that she didn't have £100 and would have to speak to her husband.

She said at that point, it crashed. I don't know whether she means the call or the computer. What she is clear on os that she didn't give them any money.

But she sys she gave him some numbers from the system. I can't get her to describe exactly what she has given him and she doesn't know either. She doesn't know whether they were controlling her computer or not or what information she gave them.

So I told her to switch the computer off and change all the passwords from a different computer. As far as issues, I don't know as I have not connected it back to an internet connection.

Just that AVG repeatedly tries to delete and quarantine this VPN9 thing.

So I'm hoping that we've managed to catch it soon enough and that if they have put anything on there it can go.

I can't see anything obvious installed in Add / Remove Programs.

    Hope this helps.

The scam always has the victim check event log and other logs in an attempt to get them to believe there is something wrong and to sell them the garbage. SInce she didn't buy into the scam, there was nothing that they could do. The scam does not take control of the system in any way. Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
    3. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    4. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Now go to the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    6. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    7. If you are running Win 8, Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below to flush restore points:
      • Refer to the instructions for your WIndows version in this link: Disable And Enable System Restore
      • What we want you to do is to first disable System Restore to flush restore points some of which could be infected.
      • Then we want you to Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
