User & Password protect webspace

Ok, there are a few files on my webspace that others can view, and I would just like the whole of my space to be password protected and user protected too if possible. I only use Smart FTP as it's free and tried to figure it out in there but can't, so could someone walk me through it or show me another FTP that they use and how to password protect my webspace???

 

Do you know how to create .htaccess, .htpasswd files.

No don't think it has worked, not sure I've done it properly. The instructions didn't seem to make much sense, do you think you should run me through what I should put in the text file(s)???
