User Profile Not "Loaded Properly" in Vista

Yesterday, my computer froze, so I did a forced restart. After taking forever to load, a temporary profile suddenly appeared, with this message at the bottom of the screen:
"Your user profile was not loaded correctly! You have been logged on with a temporary profile."
Everything saved was lost, and while I can run a search and have files appear, under Documents all of the folders are empty. I've tried restarting several times, but the same thing happens. I get a Welcome and Preparing Your Deskop message that takes forever, and then this temporary profile loads.
I've tried three different solutions found online, and none of them have worked:

I'm now at a total lost as to what to do. Can anyone please help?

Okay, I've been able to create a new profile, but it looks as if everything on the old profile was deleted. And yet, programs I downloaded that didn't come with the computer (Faststone Image Viewer, for example), are still here. If those are still on the computer, could I still have access to all of the pictures and mp3s on the old profile? Can anyone help me find the old files? They no longer appear when I run a search.

    Hi,

Do you know the original location of the files you have lost? Were they on the desktop or in the Documents folder? If they were it is possible that search won't show them because they are considered the property of your original username.

Maybe, try going to C:\Users and seeing if there is a folder with your old username. If it exists then try going inside it and opening the My Documents folder. If it won't let you into My Documents you may have to take ownership of that folder. Option 1 or 2 are probably the most straight forward. I use the context menu method (you can use the undo script to remove it when done). http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/67717-take-ownership-file.html

One other quick thought is that your original profile might not be totally corrupted. You might want to do a chkdsk on the C: drive and then try signing into the old profile one more time. If it is still slow then just continue with the new profile and consider the old one a loss.

You can run chkdsk by going to Computer and right-clicking the C: drive and selecting Properties. Then Tools tab and Error Checking, Check Now button. Tick both boxes and when you hit the Start button it will ask to schedule for next boot. Say yes and reboot. After it runs the check try your old profile to see whether or not it runs better. It may or may not be improved, just an option to try that I hadn't considered.
