I have tried with my Duel GeForce 5900, I get conflicts as soon as I enable the onboard. Good luck and Good Q, I will be watching this one as well.

Doesn't the 9800 have dual monitor outputs? I tried it, too and had no luck either.

ok after alot of looking around this is what i found out....The onboard Intel uses the AGP bus, your option is to use the onboard with or without a video memmory expansion card in the agp slot or to use a seperate agp card in the slot and NOT use the onboard graphics. looks like u cant use the onboard at the same time as another one in the AGP slot. So im off to buy a splitter tomarrow after school and see if that will work and if not its a 2nd VC...maybe if the wife lets me how that much money....lol

A splitter won't let you use both monitors as one big desktop. You would basically just be sending the same signal to each monitor. If you can't use the onboard video, you are going to need another video card to do the dual monitor extended desktop thing.

You can purchase AGP 8x cards with dual monitor capabilites for $40 - $50
Gforce 4mx440/ FX 5200/ ATI 9200SE and with 128mb ddr
I have all three of the above, and shipped for less than $50
They may not be best choice for gaming.

nahhh im not giving up my 9800 for a 5200 or less .....so it looks like im going to buy a 2nd VC ...

    Good Idea!
I did'nt mean ya should give up anything, my last sentance states "May not be best choice for gaming" but is good choice for Inexpensive means of having dual monitor capabilities.
I'd bet lot of people are using some of those cards for gaming and are happy with them, one of my Kids play's a lot of online games using FX5200, he's happy with it,I'm sure if he used one of those 9800's he would most certainly want one.

    Good Luck to Ya!

no a buddy of mine has the 9600 with a splitter that came with the VC and hes using it as a dual monitor system and it shows 2 diff screens.....maybe hes got the luck of the draw

Maybe we're talking about 2 different types of splitters, but I don't see how you can send two seperate signals through one connection.

i have no idea but thats the way his system is set up... the VC is the 9600 all-in-wonder so maybe his card is just setup that way or something....

Maybe his card has two output's one for CRT and the other is DVI, and maybe he is using DVI to CRT adaptor?
If the card has only one output channel is impossible to create dual view with two different windows being displayed at the same time.

Here is another note some cards have three output's DVI/CRT/SVideo, but most all of them only have two channels, so is only possible to do dual set up, not tripple, the only cards I know of which have three channels are Matrox cards

If your buddy has adaptor that can add dual view (that can display two different windows at the same time) to single channel/single output card, please post exact brand and model, cause I'd like to buy one.

awww i see now how its done ...heres the link to the card he has ..its a diff type of output... http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-102-345&depa=1 thats how hes able to get a dual out from one output...if u look on the card u will see the type of o/p that the card has ..i dont know the name of it but ill find out.... look at the pics they have for the card and u will see..

Never use two videocards at the same time. As I understand it you have the 9800 and the integrated one running at the same time, that right? That's *not* a good idea, disable the integrated one.

You should use the VGA connector for one monitor, and the DVI connector for the other monitor, using a DVI to VGA adapter on the second. Then you just have to use HydraVision to set it all up. There should definatly be an option for this. Worst case of scenario; Look up exactly what card and release you have and call ATI. Ask them if your card supports dual monitors and have them help you ;)

I have the MX400 and GeForce 5200 FX together. Nvidia uses the same drivers for all their cards, so no driver conflicts, and if ATI follows the same policy he should be able to get another Radeon card, too.

How do you manage that? Do you have two AGP ports or is one of them integrated?

To my knowledge, never have two video cards in use at the same time, same as you should never have 2 network cards in use at the same time if you don't use Linux or a server o/s from MS since MS standard o/s can't handle them too well. You get conflicts since Win can't seem to seperate the two cards, therefore traffic that's suppose to go through card #1 goes to #2 and vice versa. I'd say you've been lucky if you got it working, and I would never ever recommend doing this on any other computer. Especially since there are an easier way of solving this mans problem.

If I'm wrong I apologise but I don't believe my opinion is any different than Nvidia's, ATI's or Microsofts. Anything apart from that I can't stand for.

The 5200 is AGP and the MX400 is PCI. XP has multiple monitor support, and apparently it works quite well. The onboard card doesn't work-I checked. If he has XP too, he should try. From what I understood, the Catalyst drivers are the same for all ATI cards also. If it works, he could have his cake and eat it, too. (I've always wanted to say that, and mean it) :p

OK, just curious. AGP and PCI you say you use? Well this guy uses AGP and onboard:

'have tried with my Duel GeForce 5900, I get conflicts as soon as I enable the onboard.'

So therefore it'd be unwise and expensive to purchase a new video card, right? :)

no i dont use the onboard ..it wont work with the other VC that i have in the AGP slot...

The onboard card is on the AGP bus, and will conflict with any card in the AGP slot. I got a cheap PCI card, I just use it to connect my plasma TV for DVDs- I've got some of my faves on the HD. Contact ATI, and ask for any info or advice support may have. I suggested this because if it works for you, you can keep that 9800 and go dual monitor. It should work for you if your OS supports dual monitor set-ups, but check with ATI before you blow any cash on it.

I currently have 2 network cards and a wireless adapter on my pc running XP and have no problems at all. It is actually a very cheap way of networking as all I have done is run 2 crossover cables between my ICS machine and 2 others. Not the most efficient form of network but far cheaper than purchasing a hub/router. The wireless adapter allows the laptop to hook up to the internet as well.

You will actually find that several mainboards now come with 2 onboard LAN ports.

It is also actually possible to use onboard graphics with a VC to allow multiple monitors to be connected - provided one is using PCI bus and the other AGP. I did this myself just as a test exercise using intel onboard and a MX440.

hmmm... well i would like to know how u got a onboard VC tp use a pci ...when it says its for AGP.... plz let me know...

It depends on your board but you may have the option to use pci bus in bios for onboard - in my case I used a PCI VC as the board i used for the test didn't have an AGP slot.
