I want to get a big, flat screen to use as my PC monitor.

I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction.

I use my PC mostly for gaming, and want the screen to show the games as intended, just as a regular monitor does. I want to make sure the TV i buy can handle new games and games yet to come as far as graphics goes.

Does having a bigger (40"-50") screen mean you need to set higher resolution?

Is there a minimum pixel count or amount of resolution i need to keep in my when i shop for the screen?

can I get a flat screen that can handle it for less than $1000?

I am using a Geforce 3 with a tv out, and i have a 3D graphics accelerator card.

    any help would be appreciated.

    thx

I use a 46" Gateway plasma TV as a second monitor using the VGA input, but I am going to break down and get a card with DVI output, sometime. Plasma, LCD and LCD projection TVs are the best choices, and may have a VGA or even a DVI input, but remember, the larger TVs are not designed to be computer monitors. The resolution will never be what you would expect from a monitor.

Be careful before you buy, an HDTV will still pale in comparison to a monitor. your games will not look crisp and youmay have trouble reading text.

if you do decide to pursue this, you may want to look for a TV with a DVI connector, and consider upgrading to a video card with DVI out, as that will give you the best possible quality on the TV (though still not good enough IMO).

unless you have a $5000+ DLP LCDtv or a very high end plasma with good resolution, you're just not gonna get the quality you want.

true to that. you can actually find a nice samsung dlp for just over $3000 at circuit city. i know someone with one of those, and they're pretty darn clear. i don't know what a computer would look like on it, but it DOES have dvi in.

or you can get yourself a plasma tv. one of those panasonic 42" plasmas should do the trick. $2500-ish, although repairing one of those suckers is a pain and the arse if/when it starts breaking down.

another possibility is to get a projector. a decent projector would cost you about $2000, but if you want super high contrast and clarity (making it better than an LCD computer monitor), you might need to spend as much as $15000 on it.

so in conclusion, unless you're filthy rich, it's a good idea to just stick with what you have.

my friend has a htdv dlp monitor. like 50+ inches. you can hardly read the text when connected to the computer.

so basically, there gonna stall out and collect all the $$$ they can get from rich ppl for years and years before letting the middle class play thier CPU games on a big screen?

    man that sux.

guess ill make a new post in a few years.

    thx

p.s dont care about text, just want to play games in huge screen with surround sound.

I have a 21 inch monitor now.... no point in paying thousands for a monitor just to gain a few inches....

I'm not sure what it is limiting them right now, but my guess is that in the long run they will make more money doing things how they are ... 'progressively' moving up resolutions and picture quality.

currently, at least IMO, LCD tvs and DLP LCD tvs look FAR better than plasma... however, Plasma has the capability to have MUCH higher resolution than the standard plasma screen you see today... when they will release those, who knows. But i wouldnt bother trying to game on big screen until then (unless its on a projector... which is insanely out of the question $)
