is there a guide to using this program? i was told in the "how to deal with startup processes" located here - http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=149804 to use HijackT his to cleanup my startup registry entries. i have searched the forum and i cannot find any guides for it. i know how sensitive reg edits can be so i don't want to go any further without advice. in case there is no walk through for the program i posted this in malware removal as well with the log from my HijackThis scan. thread found here - http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?p=1205917#post1205917
thank you for any help you can offer.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

What startups are you trying to remove and why?

HijackThis is meant to permanently remove startup entries. Although you can restore them from backups, if you delete the backups or the HijackThis folder you cannot restore them.

You do not have the correct version of HijackThis. You need to uninstall it and install the proper version which you can get here Trend Micro HijackThis

Also you appear to be using multiple antivirus programs. You need to uninstall all but one antivirus.

I added a link to a HJT Tutorial to the Dealing with Startup Processes thread. This is the link: you can read this HijackThis Tutorial

    thanks chas

i was trying to delete those multiple antivirus programs from startup. as well as any additional cleanup i could find.

ive been trying to get rid of a quarantined item, so i installed a couple secondary AV scanners, but Kaspersky is apparently vista incompatible, and PC Tools didnt find anything. so i uninstalled them.

i installed the correct version, but to let you know, i d/led that other one from this site. maybe it wasnt updated yet.

No it is just the last version that was released by the original designer ( Merijn) before selling it off to TrendMicro. It is kept around for other reasons but is really not needed anymore.

You have stuck services from Kaspersky and also your Symantec AV appears to be broken. You need to uninstall it anyway and run the below to make sure it is removed.

    Norton Removal Tool (SymNRT)

Then you should reboot and reinstall.

I assume you meant to say that you are "malware free at the moment" ;) which is excellent.

    You're welcome. Surf safely.
