As the release date for Windows 7 approaches please keep us up to date on any procedures anyone has for getting older printers that work on XP to work on Windows 7. I know there is more to it than just a driver change. The core

or engine of Windows 7 is different from XP. Thanks.......

    Hi

What printer is it you have make and model would be good as if it has a Vista driver then its very likely it will work fine in Windows 7, Windows 7 does have a huge driver database and much better default one than XP, even finds and installed me HP 4380 by default.

But knowing your make and model will help answer your question better.

The printer I have is an HP 712C Deskjet and upon doing some research
I found that it does not work on a Vista operating system.

    Hi

Well HP do seem to mention drivers for Vista 32bit and 64bit according to this driver download page, in that a basic driver is found and installed by the OS, so at a rough guess as I dont have a 712c to test with as I have Windows 7 on my PCs is that Windows 7 "should" theoretically be no different to Vista.

I have a bottom of the line 4/5 year old Deskjet D2360 and was quite surprised when HP issued the complete suite for Vista in January after Vista was RTM'd while for many months previously people were complaining to HP, hey just give us a basic driver please, I guess HP learned from that Customer Service fiasco. :-D

I'm running W7 RTM ATM and there is a basic HP driver loaded but I'm having issues with it, fodder for another thread. Here's a compatibility chart for HP Windows 7 supported printer products for others that might want to see support for their printers. If HP follows Vista's road then many folk will get W7 specific suites. I'm going to try to load the Vista suite and see what happens just for the heck of it as that's the kind of guy I am.:banghead ;)

OK, tried the Vista suite in W7 Vista compatability mode, it loaded fine but no go at all! I had to uninstall it and took a reboot. One thing I did notice about the compat chart that I posted above it says Oct. 22, 2009. LOL, missed that one little tidbit of info.:-o:-D

So it seems they will be following their Vista experience and release it when W7 goes RTM for the regular folk.:p At least we have the basic driver for now that folks can use. :) Oh I also found out that my black cart is empty so that's why my issues. Time to buy a new printer and not necessarily HP. I'll give my current one away.

    Stupid expensive ink carts!:mad

Well, at least my not yet connected Scanjet 3670 has a basic driver though it doesn't look like it will be supported further by HP.:) I never really used it with the suite anyways so no big loss as long as it works eh.;) Gonna hook it up now and I'll post back.

Scanner works just fine.:) I connected it and speakers went 'da-bump', W7 downloaded the driver and away we go!:cool I'm impressed! However tons of stuff that HP won't

Thanks for thr replys. I'm afraid that my only way to get the HP 712C
Printer to work on Windows 7 is to purchase a Windows 7 professional
with XP installed in the same computer. This is an expensive way to go.
I would also have to get an adapter cord for a parallel port to a USB2.
The Windows 7 computer, I'm sure will no longer come with a Purple
    Parallel Port.
I haven't given up yet though. There may be "a go around' of some
    kind out there.
    Thanks for your replys.

I don't know how you can draw such a conclusion from the discussion here. Halo posted a link to a driver for that printer for Windows Vista, and he stated that, if the printer works with Vista, it will most likely work with Windows 7.

Even if it doesn't work, why buy a new computer and also buy Win XP for it when a new printer would probably cost less. You would have more modern printer, one made for USB and one that would surely print faster than your old printer. You can probably even buy an All-In-One unit for the same or less than the Win XP OS.

If you're still stuck on keeping the old printer and a new computer lacks a parallel port, I would buy a parallel card to install in the new computer.

Thanks" usafveteran" for your reply. I have to agree with you that I am going about this the hard way. I will probably end up going the way you suggest.
