Variety of issues - are they malware related?

Hi there. I have a few issues with my Dell Inspiron 6000 computer running Windows XP Pro SP3.

A couple of weeks ago, I started getting the BSOD with the message relating to the pcmcia.sys file (ADAPTER STATE NOT FOUND IN REGISTRY). This happened twice, at least a week apart. Then, last weekend, my wireless is completely gone (doesn't even show up in device manager). After a couple of reboots, I can't even reboot in safe mode. So I followed your great instructions to repair my Windows files using my installation CD, and I am able to get into Windows but still no wireless. I have reseated the adapter card, memory cards - no good. I downloaded the updated driver (Intel Wireless 2200BG), all it did was install a bunch of drivers in the device manager for hardware I don't have. It does install the 2200BG driver as well, but the yellow exclamation point is next to it and under Properties it says "Adapter state not found in registry".

The other issue is weird...when I left click on any icon on my desktop or taskbar, the Windows installer pops up and says "Preparing to install" and it's trying to install Acrobat 8.1.3. I quickly cancel it and then the left click menu finally pops up.

Could these both be related to a virus of some sort?

I have done all the READ & RUN ME tasks, and I'm attaching the logs. All went pretty well except that I could only run ComboFix from safe mode (I got a BSOD w/a stop error regarding ftdisk.sys when I ran it in normal mode). In safe mode, I did get a balloon saying there was a system error with PEV.EXE. Since I have no wireless access and my network cable was not hooked up I ran everything offline.

Perhaps these are two separate issues and need to be in two separate forums. But I would love it if you would take a look at my logs and see if you think there is a problem with malware before I take this anywhere else.

Thanks so much - you all are great!

Your logs are clean. This is not a malware issue, so I suggest you post in the software forum.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real-time protection. They are useful as backup scanners. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
