Various Problems with new pc.

Alrighty, I was told that most of the people are nice here and wouldn't kill me for not knowing something basic. So i registered to ask these questions and hopefully just see if it is something or not. Here goes.

I'll start here it might be abit long but it might have clues to maybe what it is or maybe something i did wrong. I recently about 3 weeks ago ordered some parts for a new pc from newegg. Everything went fine with the install of Windows XP Pro and SP2. Few issues with Kaspersky and Alcohol120% was just a boot.ini change and they went on great. All the drivers and such also went on great.

For awhile everything seemed fine but then things like the start menu started to popup slower. Firefox, getting lagged and not showing up. Sometimes i have to hit ctrl alt del and go to processes to close it since its not showing up under applications. General slowdown on alot of basic things when nothing else is going on. Kaspersky, nearly always gets the slowdown and its big. Not just a little slower like when several things are running. Its odd because it happens like a brick wall for an hour and then poof. Things go fast again.

Another little thing i'm curious about is my cpu fan. It runs at about 4,200 rpm when nothing is going on at 35C. I load up Unreal2k4, Morrowind, Doom 3 and play for awhile. When i close the game and check Core Center. Instead, of the fan going faster because its now 42-45C. Its down to 1,200-2,000 rpm. I even got a fan warning once from Core Center that it was going to slow.

When i run the games. I turn off kaspersky's real time and close avg. The only things running in the background are mirc (not always), Core Center in tray, Kaspersky in system tray, Nvidia desktop managed in system tray, and sometimes trillian but not very often. I do have a stylexp theme applied but i have it set to use no reasources and its not in system tray. It applies at startup and i close it.

Another, thing is my sound. The older polk audio speakers i try on this pc have no trouble with anything but my new logitech speakers have trouble with Unreal2k4, Doom 3, and anything with a mic. These key things will have static in the background like a tv with no channel but its off and on. On everything else. Morrowind or playing music on Winamp. No static or problems at all. Plays just fine.

On a small note unless the hour bit is happening everything loads fast but Unreal2k4. It always loads up very slow and my framerate tends to stick around 35fps online with people around or not and offline it sticks around 50-60fps. I have an old samtron monitor and the settings are set for its max 85 hertz. Will probaly get a new monitor soon just didn't have money to get it with other stuff.

I used MemInfo II at advice of someone else to check for loss and found nothing. I scan for virus's at least once a week with Kaspersky and the free AVG. Both are fully updated and i update them each day. Ad-Ware SE Personal from lavasoft the free version is what i use to scan for adware weekly. I've removed everything from startup that i did not want running at startup with msconfig. Only touched the startup tab and programs i knew. All drivers are updated as far as they can be.

That is everything i can think of right now to tell you. I wasn't sure where to put it in the forum and i didn't want to seperate any questions since it might be related to a problem thats causing it all. Its probaly to much info but i didn't want to leave anything out and that turn out to be it. I'm sorry if its to much or in the wrong spot.

Sorry, for double post but was to late to edit it in.

Edit: Also just remembered. Unreal2k4 and Doom 3. I closed them today and on both after closing. My screen went to 800x600, got greyish and was hard to see parts. Display dissappeared under control panel and the nvidia desktop manager would not let me use it either. Had to reboot both times to get the normal screen back but did not happen again yet on either after those two times.

 

have you tried more than just the one spyware program (Adawre) One spyware program won't even touch it if you have alot of spyware!! Unfortunately...if you do have multiple spyware programs...it will cause the computer to do unexplainable crazy things!!!!

Check out this link and follow instuctions for removing ALL spyware!! it is a bit extensive and labor intensive, but it is great for making sure that your computer is 100% virus and spyware free!!!!

Also...what are the specs on the memory?? I'm on the go a the current minute, so I haven't had a chance to check out all your links, but I will later, or i'm sure someone will!! I'll get back to you if I come up with something later!! In the meantime...check out the link below for resolving spyware issues!! you'll be amazed as to what extent spyware, adware and malware, can screw up a system!!

Spybot - found 18 small things and removed them.
Avertising.com - 10
Avenue,inc - 1
Double Click - 1
Hitbox - 4
MediaPlex - 1
WebTrends Live - 1

Hsremove - Got rid of 8 things

Bitdefender - powerreg schedulerV3.exe - Deleted

CCleaner - Over 116 things

Thats all that was found out of everything i did on the list. Nothing has changed and i hit a slowdown wall not to long ago.

To answer your question Rogvalcox the ram is Kingston ValueRAM 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel Kit System Memory.

 

ok...first of all...it is not recommended to have two anti-virus programs installed on the same system!! Odds are they WILL clash!!

Secondly...have you made sure that you have the latest bios update and the latest chipset drivers?? Also...are you using the generic drivers with windows, or are the manufacturers drivers installed for the hardware??

I'm not too firmiliar with the Athlon 64...can't afford to try one yet!! LOL

But i'm sure there is someone that can figure it ou if we can't!!

I removed Avg just now since i have Kaspersky and i'm happy with it. I'll wait awhile to see if that had any effect.

I'm fairly sure i have the latest chipset and bios update. I've been to Nvidia's website and checked. Plus, my friend bugged me on that. Had me download and install anyways. I use the manufactors if its possible on things.

Well i'm not to familar with it either. Every pc i've ever owned was out of date when i got it and i had an old hp system for five years. This is my first up to date pc and also the first 100% owned by me. So alot of it is very new to me.
