I was going to post this in the Hardware section, then I realized that it really isn't a computer question. Mods, if you feel this needs to be moved, feel free, I just wasn't sure.

OK... my dad finally decided to get up into the current century and got a VCR combo with the DVD player/recorder. The question is how you go about recording a VHS movie onto a DVD. He has some older VHS tapes that he wants to save onto DVD so they movies are not los to time and degradation. Unfortunately, when he tried to do it, the machine will not let him because of copyright issues. This is not trying to make illegal copies or anything, he just wants to make a backup copy of a movie he has already purchased, for personal viewing.

The model is a Panasonic DMR-ES45V or DMR-ES46V (both numbers are on the manual)

If anyone has any suggestions, i would gladly accept any help as this one has even me stumped.

    Thanks

It is actually one of those combo deals, 2 in 1 and all. Good thought tho. Never realized that the VHS had anti copying stuff on there. Have a couple ideas that might work, having to do with changing the region in the system and all, but will have to see.

Also, if you don't want to post it here, pls PM me.

    Thanks again

That is the hazy area of all this DRM crap!! First of all...if there is copyright stuff on the VHS, then you won't be able to do what you're trying, unless........well, I won't go there.

Back to the DRM crap...The industry says that it is illegal to copy copyrighted stuff, period. But on the flip side....some are saying that if it is your own copy that you are not going to giveaway/sell, and you are just using it as a backup or transfer to another media...then it should be alright.

So...until they figure all that out...we are at the mercy of them trying to stop the bad guys at any cost of us legit folks!!!! Quite frustrating and it's been an ongoing debate for some time now!!!!

Yeah. It's not like m dad is going to be bootlegging this stuff..LOL He just wants to save the movies he has on VHS before the tape goes bad. I mean, we're talking about movies like Backdraft and such. 90's movies that they have quite the collection of. Getting ready to write a really nasty nasty-gram to the RIAA and company. Especially since the only restrictions on copying this stuff is when you do it for profit.

    Ah well....

The copy protection scheme on many original V.C.R. Tapes is known as Macrovision, (there are various versions of this). This results in a fading out of the signal, often going to a black screen, or a warning message. The reason for this is the same as the protection on DVD's - to deter copyright infringements.

You will have to check with your local, state and federal laws, regarding this one, C.T., but there are devices that supposedly bypasses this. I know your dad owns the legit originals, but because it's still a 'grey' area, so I won't post any links or details to that here. Good luck.
